Birmingham City have already earned promotion back to the Championship. Wrexham are hoping to follow suit with what would be a stunning third-straight promotion.

Birmingham City are returning to the Championship as League One champions. They’ve blown away the competition this season with 95 points after just 40 games, and 18 left to play for.

Wrexham are in 2nd on 82 points but most important is that Phil Parkinson’s side are a point ahead of Wycombe Wanderers in 3rd place of the table, with the Chairboys having been in some patchy form over the last few weeks.

Wycombe Wanderers manager Mike Dodds says Wrexham have the advantage in the promotion race which will get back underway on Friday as the Dragons host Bristol Rovers and Wycombe head to Bolton.

Both teams have just four games to play and if one or the other, or even both are promoted then they’ll need to oversee busy summer transfer windows in order to stand a chance of staying in the Championship beyond next season.

Tom Brady’s Birmingham City could smash their transfer record this summer

Birmingham City smashed their club transfer record and also the League One transfer record last summer with the signing of Jay Stansfield, with reports claiming that fee was as high as £20million, but more likely it was around the £14million mark – still a huge fee for a third tier club.

But Tom Brady’s Birmingham City could go big again this summer. Owner Tom Wagner has told Birmingham Live that his club will break their transfer record again this summer if they ‘have the headroom’ to do so, saying: “If we have the headroom, we’ll do it.

“We’ll see. I think at the end of the day, a lot of it is thinking about what do we spend this year versus what we spend in future years? Where’s the talent? What’s the price? Where’s the value

“All of those are questions that can’t be answered until the window opens, but you know we do have high ambitions and at the same time we will be seeking great value. I think we did an exceptional job with that last summer and I think we’ll do a very good job with it this summer.”

Wrexham’s ‘headroom’ under Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds this summer

Returning to the Championship would allow the likes of Birmingham City and Wrexham to spend more on players and wages as they’d be operating under a new set of PSR rules.

And speaking to The Wrexham Insider earlier in the year football finance expert Adam Williams revealed how Wrexham would have £38million of headroom to play with in the transfer market.

Of course, that’s at the absolute maximum. Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney would surely want a more sustainable summer transfer window but they’ll surely spend relatively well nonetheless, in a bid to keep this unbelievable momentum going.

Though with Birmingham City saying they could potentially have the headroom to top a £14million deal this summer, and Wrexham having up to £38million headroom, we could easily see the Dragons outspend Blues this summer.

Birmingham City and Wrexham could be neck and neck again in the Championship next season, possibly near the bottom of the table or even towards the top.
