Previous comments made about Wrexham star Max Cleworth may worry manager Phil Parkinson.

Max Cleworth left Connah’s youth team in 2014 to link up with Wrexham as a child.

The now 22-year-old has since gone to cement himself as a regular feature for the Red Dragons’ senior side.

Cleworth made his senior league debut at 19 years and 12 days old in August 2021 versus Solihull Moors in the National League.

After giving the centre-back his debut, Phil Parkinson has continued to embed the Chester-born star into his side.

Cleworth made 21 league appearances in 2022/23 when Wrexham ended their 15-year spell in the National League.

He then played 24 League Two matches in the following campaign when the Welsh side secured yet another promotion.

Wrexham legend Max Cleworth comments were spot on

After breaking into the senior team, Wrexham legend Andy Morell praised Cleworth.

In March of 2024, the Red Dragons beat Mansfield 2-0 at the Racecourse Ground, with the stopper playing a key role.

After that match, Morrell, who spent time as both a player and manager in Wales, took to X/Twitter to show his support for Cleworth.

When doing so, the club icon backed the defender for a ‘big future’ – a prediction that is already looking correct.

After being in and out of the starting line-up last term, Cleworth has now cemented himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet in 2024/25.

He has already made 15 League One appearances, missing three games due to injury, with Wrexham fans praising Cleworth after another excellent showing last month.

Wrexham sent Max Cleworth transfer warning

Wrexham have the best defensive record in the third tier right now, shipping just 11 goals all season.

Cleworth has had a big role in that record, showing just how spot-on Morrell was with his prediciton in March.

However, while the Red Dragons are reaping the benefits of the defender growing into a top player right now, his form could lead to unwanted interest in the future.

Wrexham were sent a Cleworth transfer warning earlier this season by journalist Rich Fay.

He said: “Max [Cleworth], wow, wow, wow. He just seems to be getting better and better and better.

“Obviously his game’s not about goals but the fact he’s scoring as well. If anything, I’m quite worried because it means suitors are going to be looking and saying ‘God this is a young player that we could maybe poach in a few years’.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how Wrexham deal with it. As long as we’re doing well, it’s not a problem, but if we did have a season of stability, I’m sure Max will be getting offers from everywhere.”

Cleworth is tied down in Wales until 2027 at present, but if Wrexham don’t get promoted this season, Parkinson will surely be worried that clubs in the Championship will come knocking in the summer.
