Wrexham are making their return to the second tier of English football for the first time in more than 40 years, after their thrilling 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic secured 2nd place in the League One table.
Wrexham will play in the 2025/26 Championship season and for owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, and indeed for manager Phil Parkinson, the players and the fans, it’s another unthinkable achievement in this likewise journey.
The summer ahead promises to be another exciting one, albeit with plenty of potential pitfalls for the Dragons…
When will the summer transfer window open for Championship clubs?

Teams in the Premier League have a split transfer window, from June 1st to June 10th and then June 16th to September 1st to allow clubs to register new players for the Club World Cup this summer.
The EFL hasn’t actually yet confirmed the dates when the summer transfer window will open but it will undoubtedly open in mid-June. Potentially from June 16th to align with the Premier League’s transfer window.

When does the summer transfer window close for Championship clubs?

Top transfer targets for Wrexham in the 2025 summer window
Wrexham have a couple of names being linked with summer moves to the Racecourse right now in Jamie Vardy and Tom Lawrence.
Vardy is set to leave Leicester City as a free agent this summer. The former England man has been linked with Wrexham throughout the year but all signs are starting to point towards him not joining the Dragons, as Vardy doesn’t want to play for another English club next season.
Meanwhile Lawrence looks set to leave Rangers. And Lawrence has been linked with Wrexham as well and it looks like more of a doable deal for the Dragons, although reports linking them with a move aren’t exactly hot right now.

How much can Wrexham spend in the summer transfer window?
Wrexham broke their transfer record in January with the £2million signing of Sam Smith, having broke their transfer record on multiple occasions in the summer transfer window beforehand.
And expect the club to break that record again this summer. Football finance expert Adam Williams previously revealed Wrexham have £38million of headroom for this summer’s transfer window, minus whatever their losses are for this 2024/25 season
That doesn’t necessarily mean the club will go out and spend £38million on new signings. Williams explained to Wrexham Insider: “But even so, they should have a lot of grace in terms of how much they’re allowed to spend – at least, that will be the case in year one in the Championship.”
