Wrexham were looking to make it five wins on the spin when they hosted Crewe Alexandra on December 10th.
Wrexham have had a mixed time in cup competitions so far this season, including losing to Harrogate Town in the first round of the FA Cup.
The Red Dragons were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup earlier this campaign by Championship high-flyers Sheffield United.
As a result, their only chance of lifting a cup, barring the League One title, of course, was the EFL Trophy.
After picking up two wins and one draw in the competition already, Wrexham made it out of their group with ease and were drawn against Crewe Alexandra in the second round.
Phil Parkinson made big changes to his Wrexham starting line-up against Crewe, with George Dobson and Thomas O’Connor the only regular starters in the side when the clash got underway.

Wrexham fans all in agreement about Modou Faal after Crewe Alexandra
It was a largely disappointing first 45 from the Red Dragons, with the makeshift eleven really struggling to gel.
Wrexham’s only shot on target of the first half came from Modou Faal, who started up top alongside Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.
However, despite the striker being the only player to really test the Crewe keeper, Wrexham fans weren’t happy with how Faal performed and took to social media to express their displeasure.
One fan wrote: “The Faal transfer needs to be investigated for money laundering. Definitely won a competition to play.”
A second added: “I heard he won the half-time competition to kick the ball from the six-yard line and nearest to the centre circle wins a football contract.”
“Worrying how little Faal offers,” another stated, with a fourth writing: “Faal is a great player I imagine from the cost of him but he looks like he’s gonna fall over every time he gets the ball to his feet.”
A fifth Wrexham fan simply added: “Quicker Faal comes off the better,” with a sixth stating: “Faal’s been so poor tonight.”

Wrexham January striker plans
Yet again, it was another 90 minutes in which Wrexham’s strikers were really poor.
Parkinson’s side may have just won four in a row but their centre-forwards continue to underperform on the goal front.
The Crewe clash was a real chance for Faal and fellow fringe forward Bodvarsson to prove they are ready to step up in the league but Tuesday’s clash proved striking reinforcements are sorely needed.
We revealed last week that Wrexham want to sign Ethan Wheatley from Manchester United and his potential arrival can’t come soon enough.
