Wrexham fans criticised for something they did during the Wigan Athletic game, ‘now is not the time…’

Wrexham fans are passionate as ever and with the club on the brink of an historic third-straight promotion under Phil Parkinson, everyone is excited… and nervous.

Wrexham are just a few games away from sealing promotion to the Championship. It would be a third-straight promotion for the Dragons under Phil Parkinson who took charge in 2021, and another monumental achievement for Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s side.

Last time out though Wrexham drew 0-0 against Wigan Athletic in a game that sparked a lot of worry and anger online with many Wrexham fans not convinced about Parkinson, despite what’s been a very strong season so far.

Many are fearful that Parkinson may have already taken the club as far as they can go, especially with this style of play which many find laborious at times, and not as fast-paced or as technical as some of the other teams they’ve come up against.

And many thought the Wigan Athletic was so bad that boos were warranted.

Nathan Salt questions Wrexham fans booing after Wigan Athletic game

The game at the Brick Community Stadium certainly wasn’t a classic. But it was a point and clean sheet for the Dragons; a point that currently separates them from Wycombe Wanderers in 3rd place of the League One table. Despite that, there were loud boos after the Wrexham game.

Speaking on the RobRyanRed podcast, journalist Nathan Salt picked up on the boos and questioned the fans who got involved, saying: “There was a large number of people that booed the team off at the end. I don’t want to say it was the majority or the minority, it was just a large number, and in a way I can understand it: the pressure is just so high now, everybody just wants to get promoted.

“But we’re still 2nd. It’s still in our own hands. Now is not the time to go into recriminations. I get it was bad on the day, but I thought booing them off was way, way too strong.”

Wrexham fans’ anger at Phil Parkinson may be because of one key error

Whether fans are angry at Parkinson or just nervous about the run in, as Salt suggests, remains to be seen. Parkinson has done another stellar job this season and securing promotion would make him even more of a club legend.

But it seems like the situation with Wrexham striker Paul Mullin is something that fans are angry about. That, and also Parkinson’s continued selection of the misfiring Jay Rodriguez.

Wrexham fans want Rodriguez axed against Bristol Rovers on Friday and replaced with Mullin who’s not played a single minute of league football in 14 games now.

Whilst the result is all that matters on Friday, Parkinson could silence a few of his critics by reinstating Mullin, even if it is just to the bench.
