Former Sheffield Wednesday player Josh Windass has become an instant hit at Wrexham after impressing on his debut.

Wrexham played FC Groningen in their final pre-season game of the summer on Saturday, August 2.

The clubs agreed to play out two separate friendlies on the day, the first taking place at Groningen’s training ground in the morning.

Ollie Palmer was among those to feature as Wrexham lost 1-0 against Groningen behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, there was a debut for Josh Windass in the second game of the day, which fans could watch, but a Wrexham error forced some supporters to pay for the tie, which should have been free to members.

Wrexham fans praised Josh Windass after goal vs FC Groningen

Wrexham signed Josh Windass from Sheffield Wednesday last month after he and former transfer target Michael Smith were allowed to terminate their contracts with the Owls.

The attacking midfielder started up front over the weekend, playing just behind Ryan Hardie in a similar role to what Elliot Lee took up last season.

Groningen took the lead on the day, but Windass put them back on level terms with a lovely volley following a long ball from George Dobson.

Wrexham fans have since reacted to the strike on social media, with one writing: “Absolute [peach] that… and what an assist from Dobson.”

A second reacted: “What a quality player Windass is.”

“Debut goal and if that’s a sign of things to come, we’ve got ourselves a [peach] of a player,” another added.

A fourth tweeted: “Windass is on fire!”

Another Wrexham supporter predicted: “First of many,” with a sixth tweeting: “Windass take a bow!!”

Phil Parkinson set for welcome Wrexham problem

Saturday’s second friendly of the day suggests Windass will be used in a more advanced role by Phil Parkinson this season, like Elliot Lee was in 2024/25.

It means Hardie, Windass and Sam Smith are already competing for two starting places, with another couple of strikers set to be signed soon.

Nathan Broadhead will be Wrexham’s new record signing when his move from Ipswich Town is finalised.

Kieffer Moore is expected to arrive at the Racecourse Ground from Sheffield United as well, giving Parkinson five top attacking options to pick from.
