Four years on from Paul Mullin’s arrival at Wrexham, it’s interesting to look back at how Red Dragons fans reacted at the time, and how wrong their rivals were about him, too.
Paul Mullin may have moved on to embark on a new chapter at Wigan Athletic this summer, but Wrexham fans still absolutely adore the legendary striker.
His incredible goal tally for Wrexham has been integral to their climb out of the National League and gaining promotion from League Two.
Of course, last season was a difficult one for Mullin, and his exit from Wrexham was inevitable. But, it’s safe to say he was a successful signing, even if not everyone believed so at the time.

Wrexham fans knew Paul Mullin would be a success
At the time, it was a big deal that Mullin had signed for Wrexham. This was a player who had absolutely dominated the scoring charts in League Two, scoring 32 goals to fire Cambridge United to promotion.
Instead of sticking with them and having a shot at League One football, Mullin dropped two divisions to Wrexham to become a part of the exciting new project being put together by Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.
Reacting to the news on Twitter/X, Wrexham fans were absolutely over the moon with the new signing.
One supporter said, “What a signing that is,” while another added, “Here we go! Time to get really really excited.”
Wrexham legend Andy Morrell also chimed in, writing: “That’s a massive statement of intent!”
Elsewhere, fans predicted Mullin’s arrival would spell the end of their exile in the National League. One said, “Up we go,” while another added, “Announce promotion.”
It may have taken him a year longer than planned, but Mullin certainly delivered on that front. He scored 28 goals in his first season at Wrexham, before banging in a whopping 38 the following year as the Red Dragons won the National League title.
That proved rival fans wrong, who all seemed to believe Mullin would regret his move. One said, “Just shows a lack of ambition,” and another replied, “Give it a year and he will want out as Wrexham ain’t going up.”

2025/26 is crucial for Paul Mullin’s career
After a poor showing in 2024/25, with injuries and a dip in form tarnishing Mullin’s reputation, the season ahead with Wigan is absolutely key for the 30-year-old.
Pundits predict Mullin’s move to Wigan is a statement of intent, just as his switch to Wrexham was four years ago.
If he can stay fit, there’s no reason why he can’t thrive in League One and prove that he’s capable of playing at that level.
Given his age and the fact he is seemingly surplus to requirements for Wrexham, this is potentially Mullin’s last roll of the dice in carving out a career in the third tier. And, if all goes to plan, he may still get to live out his dream of playing in the Championship, whether that’s with Wrexham or not.
