Wrexham fans may be baffled by what one Championship pundit is now saying about Conor Coady

Wrexham summer signing Conor Coady has surprisingly been handed a poor review by one EFL expert.

Wrexham find themselves 15th in the Championship table after a rocky start to the 2025/26 campaign.

The Red Dragons went winless in their opening three games, which saw Phil Parkinson draw in scrutiny, especially after the 2-2 draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

However, that was soon corrected as Wrexham recorded a brilliant win against Millwall on their travels.

It has been a challenging period for the club, as was expected, as Parkinson’s signings need time to gel into the newly evolved Wrexham squad.

Several signings have already shone for the Red Dragons in the early stages of the season, but Conor Coady has been questioned after an apparently difficult start to life in North Wales.

Wrexham signing Conor Coady’s ability questioned by Championship expert

Wrexham signed Conor Coady this summer from Leicester City as Phil Parkinson looked to add a leader to the heart of defence.

The Red Dragons’ new man, who has experience in the England set-up, as well as a total of 198 appearances at Premier League level, has played every minute of the Championship so far for Parkinson’s side.

It has, however, been a difficult start to life at the Racecourse Ground, according to Championship expert Ali Maxwell, who, via Dragon Sports, has been disappointed with the former Leicester City and Wolves defender so far.

“Connor Coady, I don’t think has performed particularly well in Wrexham’s defence so far and what you do get from Coady in terms of fantastic long passes, and the leadership skills that are less tangible,” said Maxwell.

“I’m not sure they are getting the benefit of those weighed up against what I believe to be some issues defensively against quick and strong and tall strikers at this level.”

According to SofaScore, Conor Coady is yet to be dribbled past in the Championship this season, and has been on hand to tally an average of six clearances per game.

Coady was also praised by Phil Parkinson after playing an integral part in the Millwall win.

Lewis Brunt and Max Cleworth accommodate potential Conor Coady shortcomings

While Conor Coady may not be the most imposing, nor the quickest defender in the Championship, that is certainly made up for by his fellow centre-backs, Lewis Brunt and Max Cleworth.

Once the Wrexham trio notch more gametime together, the better they will work together, something that we have already seen in the win against Millwall.

Wrexham have every reason to be optimistic with Coady in defence, and while the Red Dragons veteran is gaining scrutiny from one EFL expert, many supporters will believe that there have been more positive signs from the defender.
