Wrexham fans send clear message to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds over controversial topic

Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds should now be aware they must never do one thing at Wrexham.

Wrexham face Mansfield Town in a League One clash on Saturday afternoon, aiming to climb back into the automatic promotion places.

It is a big game for both sides, with the Red Dragons third in the division and Mansfield just a point behind them in fourth with a game in hand.

However, much of the chatter amongst Wrexham fans prior to the game has instead been focused on a different subject.

When Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds purchased the club in February 2021 from the Supporters Trust, they promised ‘to protect the heritage that has made Wrexham AFC and the Racecourse Ground such a special place to watch football for the last 156 years’.

Earlier this week though, journalist Nathan Salt urged McElhenney and Reynolds to break a Wrexham promise by altering the club’s badge.

Wrexham fans message to Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds over badge change

Salt produces a Wrexham-based podcast called ‘Rob. Ryan. Red’ where he first brought up the idea of a badge change.

The podcast’s X/Twitter account has since asked Wrexham fans for their thoughts on Rob and Ryan changing up the club crest and it is fair to say they are all in agreement.

One fan wrote: “Never in my opinion!! Traditional is huge in my world! Half way house is some teams modernising badge and wearing on away shirts!”

A second added: “No way….the Wrexham ‘project’ is just starting… the badge is our heritage and will be recognised as our brand for the wider fan base.”

A third fan stated: “It’s a firm no from me. I can’t imagine us with an alternative badge. Not needed at all.”

A fourth supporter wrote: “Nope it is perfect the way it is,” while another added: “Absolutely not, 100 percent no.”

A sixth Wrexham fan wrote: “This seems to get asked every year and every year it’s the same answer: No.”

While a seventh fan simply stated: “No way. We need to keep it.”

How old is Wrexham’s badge?

Wrexham’s current club badge has now been in place since 1973.

It was created after a local newspaper ran a design competition and invited supporters to submit proposals for the Red Dragons’ badge to mark the club’s centenary.

Wrexham was formed in 1864 and used a gold and black version of their badge to mark the club’s 150th anniversary in 2014.
