Wrexham flop is three goals away from breaking personal record, Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer can’t touch him

Wrexham have seen a lot of their centre-forwards struggle to find the back of the net in 2024/25.

Paul Mullin has over 100 goals for Wrexham and Ollie Palmer has been a consistent, if slightly less dangerous than Mullin, goal threat since he joined from AFC Wimbledon.

However, both strikers have only been able to score three goals each during the 2024/25 League One campaign.

This has seen Phil Parkinson hand Elliot Lee an unorthodox Wrexham role as a second-striker – a decision that never really paid off.

Steven Fletcher, now 37, has also had to be relied on heavily to add goals to their team, as has centre-back Max Cleworth.

But despite flopping at the Racecourse Ground, one player is now outshining all of the aforementioned stars in the 2024/25 season.

Sam Dalby likely to surpass Wrexham goal tally soon

Sam Dalby arrived at Wrexham from Southend United in August of 2022 on a permanent transfer for an undisclosed fee.

Being kept out of the starting eleven for large periods by the aforementioned Mullin and Palmer, however, he never really got going in Wales.

The 25-year-old made 88 appearances across all competitions and scored 13 goals – the most he has netted for any club throughout his career.

Dalby was then sent out on loan to Dundee United in August and looks like a completely different player this season.

After most recently netting in a 3-1 defeat to Rangers, the centre-forward has already found the net 11 times in 22 league games for his new club.

In turn, if he scores three more goals in the remainder of 2024/25, he will surpass his tally for most goals scored at a club – doing so in a lot fewer matches than he managed at Wrexham.

What Wrexham plan to do with Sam Dalby

Dalby is, of course, still under contract with Wrexham until the end of the 2024/25 season.

However, his future with the club is very much up in the air going into the final few months of the season.

Wrexham offered Dalby a contract prior to the winter transfer window opening but he’s yet to accept it.

Given Parkinson already has seven strikers on his books this season, it’s hard to see the Dundee United loanee wanting to commit his future to the Red Dragons anytime soon.

The best move for the player, albeit not for Wrexham, would be to run his deal down and then have his pick of clubs as a free agent over the summer.
