Wrexham have enjoyed another tremendous season and their success could see one man granted a gift.

Wrexham were promoted to the Championship on April 26 after beating Charlton Athletic 3-0 to secure second place in League One.

The Red Dragons are back in the second tier of English football for the first time since the 1980s.

Wrexham made history when they won promotion against Charlton. They secured the most points they have ever managed in a single EFL season (92).

Meanwhile, they became the first club ever to win three promotions in a row when starting in the National League or higher.

A number of stars impressed over the course of the 2024/25 campaign, with Ollie Rathbone winning the Wrexham Player of the Season award.

But it’s Phil Parkinson who could now be recognised for his efforts over the last four years.

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson could be granted freedom of the county borough

Wrexham appointed the 57-year-old as manager in the summer of 2021 following the sacking of Dean Keates.

Parkinson had West Brom interest, but the Red Dragons were able to flex their ‘financial clout’ to get a deal done, as Humphrey Ker said recently.

He’s since taken the club out of the fifth tier and up to the Championship for the first time ever.

Now, as per Wrexham.com, Parkinson could be granted the freedom of the county borough as recognition of his efforts in the last four years.

An Executive Board will consider recommending the Wrexham boss before 56 councillors will vote, needing a two thirds majority for the honour to be granted.

Councillor Mark Pritchard commented on the decision to nominate Parkinson, saying: “In 2022, the council granted freedom of the county borough to the club’s owners, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.

“It now seems fitting to have a similar discussion about granting the same honour to Phil Parkinson, as he’s done an incredible job in taking the team from National League to Championship football over the past three seasons.

“What the club has achieved is phenomenal – not just in terms of success on the pitch, but also in terms of the knock-on effect for the city as a whole. It’s given Wrexham renewed confidence.”

Manager tipped for Wrexham job

Parkinson is back competing in the Championship for the first time in many years, previously taking charge of Bolton Wanderers in the second tier.

It would be bizarre to see him leave the club anytime soon, though one manager has been backed to take charge of the Welsh outfit one day.

Wrexham were tipped as Ange Postecoglou’s next job by one journalist recently as he struggles at Tottenham Hotspur.

Tim Spiers wrote: “A serial winner, as we all know, but what has the Tottenham job done to his reputation?

“Well, after inevitably being sacked by Spurs soon, Postecoglou will want a club on the up, a club who’ll want to play attacking football, and a club who want to win a big trophy in two years. Next job: Wrexham.”
