Wrexham are through to the Carabao Cup fourth round, but won’t be facing Paul Mullin’s Wigan Athletic.

Tuesday night brought another victory for Phil Parkinson, as Wrexham beat Reading 2-0 at the STōK Cae Ras.

Record signing Nathan Broadhead scored both goals to send Wrexham into round four of the Carabao Cup for the first time in 48 years.

Parkinson is looking for a plum tie in the next round, but we can rule out a clash with Wigan Athletic.

Wrexham hero Paul Mullin looks set for crucial Wigan Athletic role

Paul Mullin scored for Wigan against Bolton Wanderers on Saturday, providing the only moment of quality for the Latics in a harrowing 4-1 defeat.

Wigan hosted Wycombe Wanderers on Tuesday night, and were looking to join Wrexham in round four of the Carabao Cup.

Ryan Lowe rotated his side and only introduced Mullin as a substitute for 10 minutes, but was made to regret that decision.

Wigan fell to a 2-0 defeat, and Lowe told the club’s official YouTube channel that he will not be rotating his side again any time soon.

Lowe felt that the players who came into the side didn’t do nearly enough to win a regular place in the team.

“We just didn’t have enough at the top end of the pitch, unfortunately,” said Lowe.

“I’m really, really disappointed with the selection of the players, because they had an opportunity to showcase what they’re about, and I must say, there was not many that took it.

“They’ve been told in no uncertain terms that there was an opportunity for certain players tonight, after Saturday’s performance, to go on and stake a claim for Saturday, but there’s not many headaches, put it that way.

“I’ve just said to the players that there’s 37 games to go now. I’ll pick the best team right the way through. There’s not going to be no selection headaches for me at this moment in time, and I’ll pick the players who I feel can give their all and also give us three points, or definitely a point, as the weeks come on,” he added.

That means regular starters such as Mullin now look set to play a key role for the foreseeable future, and that seems perfect for the Wrexham loanee.

Mullin has scored three times in his last five League One outings and really appears to be finding his best form for the Latics.

It’s great to see Mullin thriving once again, and Lowe’s frustration with Wigan’s fringe players suggests that the Wrexham hero is poised for a significant role moving forward.

Paul Mullin could take down Wrexham’s Welsh rivals this weekend

Lowe’s comments suggest that Mullin will come straight back into the starting XI this weekend.

Wrexham fans may just keep one eye on Mullin’s fortunes on Saturday, as Wigan take on Cardiff City.

Mullin could take down Wrexham’s Welsh rivals this weekend, with Wigan looking to get back on track after a couple of difficult defeats.

Mullin showed some rustiness upon arriving at Wigan, which was almost to be expected after a lack of playing time at Wrexham.

The striker is now getting right back to his best, and appears to be one of the few Wigan players to have escaped Lowe’s wrath after Tuesday’s defeat.
