Wrexham needed to ‘push the boat out’ to sign former Premier League winner, says former player

Wrexham were incredibly busy in the summer transfer window ahead of their Championship campaign, as 13 signings made their way to the club to bring the quality needed to keep them in the division.

Several of the new signings have become key to Phil Parkinson’s team so far this campaign, with Kieffer Moore topping a surprising Championship stat, demonstrating his importance to the side.

Dominic Hyam has been another standout for the Red Dragons, as he has helped to shore up their defence as they are currently on an unbeaten run of four games in the league.

Wrexham spent £33 million in the summer to bring about this type of form; however, one former star of the Welsh club believes they are still missing one crucial type of player.

Matt Jansen believes Wrexham should have tried harder to sign Jamie Vardy

Matt Jansen was a Wrexham player in 2009, playing three games for the Red Dragons in the Conference North, only scoring one goal; however, he will be more fondly remembered for his time at Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League.

He understands the quality required to play in the Premier League and believes this type of player would have significantly helped the Welsh club in their objectives this season, with Jamie Vardy being the ideal candidate due to being available for free this summer.

Speaking to the Fearless in Devotion podcast in association with Palantir Financial Planning, he said: “Could Wrexham have pushed the boat out a little bit more for Jamie Vardy? Maybe he wanted the earth; I don’t know. But with Kieffer Moore, only time will tell whether he’ll be able to get them the goal.

“I like Josh Windass, but he’s not a prolific goalscorer, and I do worry that they haven’t got that. Maybe Kieffer Moore might prove me wrong, and Ryan Hardie will chip in with a few goals.

“But I think they could have pushed the boat out for Jamie Vardy or somebody similar. I think that would have stood them in better stead than not having that proven goalscorer.”

However, it is known that the former England international would join Cremonese in Serie A this summer after ending his spell with Leicester City.

Wrexham did not need Jamie Vardy

The former Leicester City star was a prolific goalscorer while in England at all levels, but particularly in the Premier League, as he helped the Foxes to a memorable title-winning season in 2016.

However, since joining Cremonese, he is yet to register a goal and has only featured twice in their Serie A campaign, perhaps hinting at a waning of his powers.

Vardy may have had to accept a role as an impact sub at Wrexham, and he may not have been willing to do that, as he believed he could lead the line for any club after his performance for Leicester in the English top flight last season.

Phil Parkinson is unlikely to have said no to the chance of signing Vardy, but a question is about whether he would upset the current balance Wrexham have, as they found the formula to go on an unbeaten run of four games in the Championship.
