Wrexham overachieving after Rob McElhenney’s favourite player made League One prediction in June

Wrexham are back in League One action on Saturday afternoon against Rotherham United.

The Red Dragons are competing in the third tier of English football for the first time since it was rebranded.

The Welsh outfit have won promotion in the previous two seasons and are in with a great shout of making it three on the spin in 2024/25.

Wrexham face Rotherham United in a 3pm kick-off on March 8th and a win could see them climb up to second in the table if Wycombe Wanderers lose their meeting with Peterborough United.

Even if Wycombe don’t drop points, however, Phil Parkinson’s side are expected to maintain their third-place spot and are almost certainly going to end the campaign inside the top six.

With 12 fixtures left to play this term, Wrexham are already seven points clear off sixth-place Huddersfield Town, who have also played one game more than the Hollywood-owned side.

Wrexham overachieving after Rob McElhenney’s favourite made League One prediction

A play-off finish may come as a slight disappointment to some fans given how close they have been to automatic promotion all season.

But it would still be a great achievement and completely smash the expectations around the club when the season got underway.

Wrexham were predicted to finish 19th in League One by Opta, while Humphrey Ker was happy with 12th or above, suggesting anything higher than that should warrant a statue being built for Parkinson.

Meanwhile, Luke Young made a prediction in June 2024 about where the club would finish in League One, suggesting there would be a dip at some point in the team’s future and that fans should not have looked at a mid-table finish in the current campaign as a problem.

He said: “But even if I was still there as a player, if you finish mid-table in League One after getting promoted twice, I don’t think you can look at that as a problem as a fan.

“I think the hype of everything, the highs of everything, there’s going to come a time when there’s going to be a little dip. And if that is being stable in League One for next year, I think you should snap your hand off.”

Nine months later, anything other than a top-six finish at this stage would likely be classed as a disaster by fans, given how good Wrexham have been this term and their league position.

It’s easy to see why Young was touting a mid-table finish at the time, but the Red Dragons have completely blown those expectations, that where shared by many, out the water.

What is Luke Young doing after leaving Wrexham

Rob McElhenney’s favourite player is Young, and the Wrexham co-owner has made no secret about that.

Speaking back in October 2024, McElhenney said: “We have had so many valleys along the way, in so far of Ben Tozer and Luke Young – who is my favourite player. I was very public in stating that. That’s no slight on the other players, I just love Luke.

“He was our longest-tenured player, he was with us from the very beginning, so to say goodbye to him was devastating.”

After leaving Wrexham on a free transfer in the summer of 2024, Young is now playing for Cheltenham Town in League Two.

The midfielder has made 38 appearances in all competitions so far this season, scoring four and assisting three.
