Wrexham player receives international call-up, just days after Phil Parkinson confirmed injury scare

Wrexham have brought in a number of international players this summer as Phil Parkinson approaches double figures in terms of incoming signings.

Wrexham have already made nine signings this summer, and Phil Parkinson may now have another new face on the way in soon.

Manchester City’s Callum Doyle is now expected to join Wrexham in a deal worth up to £8million, marking another significant investment.

Doyle is an England Under-21 international, and he will be in line to feature against Kazakhstan in September.

Parkinson has added other internationals, with Welsh trio Danny Ward, Nathan Broadhead and Kieffer Moore all on board.

Wales face Kazakhstan and Canada in September, and all three of those Wrexham players will be in contention to play.

Wrexham’s Liberato Cacace called up by New Zealand

International breaks haven’t been a huge factor for Wrexham in recent years, often failing to reach the threshold for the number of international call-ups needed to postpone a fixture.

That all changes in the Championship, with all international breaks taken as free weekends throughout the league.

Wrexham will have a number of players off on international duty this time around, including Liberato Cacace.

Cacace joined Wrexham from Empoli earlier in the summer, and arrived having racked up 33 caps to his name.

New Zealand tackle Australia twice in September, and Cacace has been confirmed as part of Darren Bazeley’s squad.

Cacace joins the likes of Nottingham Forest star Chris Wood, Sheffield United loanee Tyler Bindon and Swansea City-bound Marko Stamenic in the New Zealand squad.

The timing is interesting, though, as Cacace missed Wrexham’s 3-2 defeat to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.

Parkinson told BBC Sport that Cacace was suffering from a hamstring issue, so Wrexham decided to leave him out.

“Libby had a bit of tightness in his hamstring. We weren’t going to risk him,” said Parkinson.

Wrexham play two more games between now and the international break, and it’s unclear whether Parkinson intends to throw Cacace back in.

Parkinson and Wrexham must now trust New Zealand to look after Cacace and manage his minutes, with this hamstring injury requiring careful management.

Liberato Cacace pushing towards World Cup

Cacace will be keen to make his mark in the Championship this season, all with a view to shining at the World Cup next summer.

New Zealand have already qualified for the World Cup and Cacace figures to be a key part of their plans.

Cacace has been a fixture of the New Zealand squad in recent years, and he would almost certainly be a nailed-on starter as long as he is fit and available.

Dennis Lawrence was Wrexham’s last player at the World Cup in 2006, and Cacace could follow in his footsteps by representing the All Whites next summer.
