With excitement surrounding Josh Windass and Lewis O’Brien, Wrexham fans could be forgiven for forgetting the historic capture of Liberato Cacace.

Wrexham broke their transfer record when signing Cacace but that record has once again been beaten with the O’Brien deal.

Cacace became the first overseas signing for Wrexham, another historic landmark under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

The 24-year-old arrives in North Wales a relatively unknown entity in English football but Italian football expert and Wrexham fan Giacomo Cobianchi has given his verdict on the former Empoli man.

Italian football expert warns Liberato Cacace has not mastered a specific position

Speaking on the latest episode of the ‘Rob.Ryan.Red’ podcast, Cobianchi has revealed that Cacace’s versatility has meant that the New Zealand international has not yet ‘mastered’ a position.

Cacace played a number of roles for Empoli last season, including left back and attacking midfield and Cobianchi thinks that he does not yet know where his best position is.

Cobianchi stated: “I think it’s a good signing. He was useful for Empoli. He played in a lot of positions, mainly as a winger, wing-back on the left, but also played as a left central midfielder when they played a three-man midfield. Also, in some matches, he played as a midfielder behind the forward.

“I think he’s very versatile because he covered so many positions. Which on one side, this was good because it boosted his growth in Italy. But from the other side, it didn’t give him the time to master one of these positions.”

Phil Parkinson’s system of 3-5-2 would indicate a role for Cacace providing competition or cover for skipper James McClean at left wing-back.

However, due to the New Zealand international’s versatility, he could be used to plug a number of gaps throughout the campaign.

Journalist unsure over the Wrexham signing of ‘unknown’ Liberato Cacace

Also speaking on the podcast, journalist Rich Fay has revealed that he is in two minds over the signing of Cacace given his lack of experience in the English game.

Fay explained: “I think with Cacace, I know this is very vague and very obvious. He almost feels like he’s going to be our best signing of the summer or the worst.

“It’s not going to be anywhere in between for me. It’s like that he comes with so much hype, so much unknown about him, like he had serious interest from a lot of other clubs. He looks like a really good get and yeah, I just can’t wait to see.”

The arrival of Cacace put the futures of Jacob Mendy and Sebastian Revan in doubt at the club and attentions will start to turn to players leaving the club.

Wrexham can name a 25-man squad for the Championship campaign and there are expected to be further arrivals than the six already completed.
