Wrexham promotion winner still without a club nine months after exit, Phil Parkinson thought he was ‘great’

It has been a mixed 2024/25 for the players Wrexham released during the summer of 2024.

Rob Lainton spent eight months without a club following his exit from the Racecourse Ground in June of last year.

However, likely to the delight of Wrexham fans who grew to love the goalkeeper during his spell in the ‘Welcome to Wrexham‘ documentary, Lainton signed for Altrincham late last month, ending his long stint as a free agent.

Elsewhere, defender Aaron Hayden could be relegated from League Two with Carlisle United, who currently sit dead bottom of the fourth division.

On a more positive note, former Wrexham captain Ben Tozer can win promotion with Forest Green Rovers from the National League this term.

They are third in the fifth tier right now but have a game in hand on first place and could still win the play-offs.

Elsewhere, however, much like Lainton until very recently, another released Wrexham ace is still yet to sign for a new team since departing Wales.

Callum McFadzean still without club after Wrexham exit

The player in question is Callum McFadzean, who joined Wrexham from Crewe Alexandra in January 2022 for an undisclosed fee.

The left-back has previously enjoyed spells with the likes of Plymouth Argyle, Sundelrand and Sheffield United and played an important role in Wrexham’s promotion from the National League.

McFadzean made 31 appearances in the 2022/23 season for the Red Dragons, providing three assists.

However, his game time was then heavily reduced in the following campaign after Wrexham moved up to League Two.

The 31-year-old only notched 86 minutes of action in the fourth tier before he was let go in June 2024.

What Phil Parkinson told Callum McFadzean after Wrexham release

In total, McFadzean made 52 appearances across all competitions for Wrexham – the most he had racked up for any club.

And while he may not have been one of the big names involved in the Red Dragons’ rise, he still earned praise from his now former boss.

Speaking in June 2024 after his release, McFadzean revealed what Phil Parkinson told him in private.

He said: “The gaffer said to me that I’ve been great. People might not see it but behind the scenes and in training, he said the standards I kept was one of the reasons why he put me back in the 22-man squad.

“He said I’d been unlucky to miss out but those are the decisions he has to make. But it was great to be back involved at the end and get another promotion.”
