Lewis O’Brien has enjoyed life at Wrexham so far since he joined the club this summer, as he has been key to their uplift in form.

The midfielder was at the centre of everything in the Red Dragons’ 1-1 draw with Derby County at the weekend, as he scored their goal.

However, Mark Clattenberg believed Lewis O’Brien should have seen red for a dangerous challenge on Ebou Adams and not been on the pitch for his goal, and so the result may have been different.

Phil Parkinson will be relieved the referee on the day did not view it the same way and that he was able to help them secure another point in the Championship. Now the creative player has given his insight into why Wrexham are now getting results in the division.

Lewis O’Brien believes competition for places has seen Wrexham’s form improve

Wrexham spent £33 million on 13 summer signings in the transfer window to bring in quality for the Championship campaign; however, this took time, and several of the new players joined after the start of the season.

Now that there has been time for them to embed under Parkinson and to get used to his tactics, with Lewis O’Brien believing the competition for places is key to their recent upturn in form.

Speaking to The Leader, he said: “It’s more on the team side. If I can play well week in, week out, it’s going to help the team progress and be where they want to be because I think everyone here wants to go in the same direction.

“I like to play as many minutes as I can. I think everyone does that comes into the club.

“The amount of players we have, the competition’s really good, and it means we’re pushing each other every day and every week.

“Anyone can play in the team, and luckily it’s been me so far.”

Lewis O’Brien is surprised by his fine goalscoring form

The midfielder seems to have settled into life at the Racecourse Ground, as he has been in the best goalscoring form of his career.

It has been his best return in the Championship, as he has equalled his best tally, three goals, in just seven games of the season so far.

He said: “I’m surprised with the number of goals, to be fair. It’s my best return in a while.

“I’ve only been getting maybe one goal every 15, 16 games.

“I still want to chip in with goals and assists. I want to get as many goal involvements as I can.

“But personally, I don’t really set many targets.”
