Wrexham are looking to see off Wycombe Wanderers to take the second and final automatic promotion place.

After Wrexham drew with Wigan Athletic on Saturday, Birmingham City were officially crowned League One champions.

The Blues have ran away with the league, leaving the Red Dragons and Wycombe Wanderers battling for second place.

On this front, Phil Parkinson’s side do have a slightly more favourable run of fixtures and a one-point lead going into the latest round of games.

Wrexham transfer target can help Bolton beat Wycombe Wanderers

Automatic promotion is by no means guaranteed, however, and Wrexham can’t really afford to drop any points in their remains ties.

However, fans will take solace in the fact that Wycombe face a much tougher run-in.

The Chairboys’ next outing sees them face off with Bolton Wanderers on Friday afternoon.

Bolton are eighth in the division right now but still have a lot to play for, sitting just three points adrift of sixth-place Reading.

Wycombe will also be coming up against a player the Red Dragons tried and failed to sign fairly recently.

Wrexham wanted to sign John McAtee during the 2024 summer transfer window, but he instead favoured a move to Wycombe’s next opponents, Bolton.

Following his summer switch, the 25-year-old has shone as a centre-forward and in the number 10 role, scoring 11 goals and assisting three in 41 matches.

Wrexham may not have got their man in the summer, but a big display from McAtee against Wycombe on Friday could be massive for the former’s promotion chances.

John McAtee transfer saw Wrexham labelled ‘tinpot’

Since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over, Wrexham have been used to getting their man.

However, when the now Bolton ace opted to snub the Welsh outfit for his current side, rival fans seemed to revel in the news.

Humphrey Ker discussed the John McAtee transfer late last month, mentioning how Bolton fans were calling them ‘tinpot’ when missing out on the forward.

He said: “This is pulling back the curtain probably more than I’m supposed or allowed to, but this off-season, we were looking at John McAtee, a player who was at Luton, and he ended up signing for Bolton,” said Ker.

“The press had got hold of ‘Wrexham are interested in signing John McAtee, so are Bolton’, he goes to Bolton and the Bolton fans are like ‘tinpot Wrexham, he wants to come to a proper football club’, and our fans are like ‘they must have paid three times as much for him as we were willing to’ and ‘we’ve given up on the league because we’re not spending enough money’.”
