Wrexham are gunning for a third-successive promotion this season, and the midweek result in League One was a bittersweet one for the Red Dragons.
Since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over Wrexham, the club has risen from the National League and bypassed League Two very quickly.
With more than half of this season gone, Phil Parkinson’s men are once again battling for promotion, with a place in the Championship in their sights.
While Wrexham are at a disadvantage compared to Birmingham City, they are now closing in on an automatic promotion spot thanks to Wycombe’s latest defeat.

Wycombe’s loss to Huddersfield could lead to four-horse race for promotion
Wrexham’s EFL Trophy clash with Port Vale was postponed on Tuesday night due to the heavy snow in the UK, meaning the Red Dragons could only sit back and watch two of their promotion rivals battle it out.
Second-placed Wycombe hosted fourth-placed Huddersfield in the sole League One game in midweek, in a game which could have sent the home side top of the table. Instead, a 15th-minute goal from Herbie Kane was enough to seal all three points for Huddersfield.
| Rank | Club | Played | W | D | L | GD | Points |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Birmingham | 23 | 16 | 5 | 2 | 24 | 53 |
| 2 | Wycombe | 25 | 15 | 6 | 4 | 23 | 51 |
| 3 | Wrexham | 25 | 15 | 6 | 4 | 19 | 51 |
| 4 | Huddersfield | 24 | 14 | 5 | 5 | 18 | 47 |
The result leaves Wycombe and Wrexham level on points after 25 games each, with the former ahead only on goal difference. This could be a real turning point in the automatic promotion battle now, with the next fixtures potentially flipping the fight for second spot.
However, both Wycombe and Wrexham will now be looking nervously over their shoulders at Huddersfield, who have a game in hand that could take them within one point of the top two.
With Michael Duff’s team finding momentum at just the right time, there is every chance we could see a major change around the top of the League One table in the coming weeks.

Consistency will be key to League One promotion battle
It’s obviously too early to call it, but it would be very surprising indeed if Birmingham now didn’t clinch the League One title come the end of the season. The Blues are simply too strong both at home and away, and are very hard to beat.
However, that race for second place is going to go down to the wire, and it will all come down to whichever team can maintain momentum and put together a decent run of form here and there.
Phil Parkinson insisted the promotion race would open up just a month ago, and his prediction has clearly come true already. If Huddersfield win their game in hand, anything can happen.
Wrexham will need to ensure they keep up their great home form at the Racecourse Ground for the rest of the season, and try to fix that troublesome away record if they are to win the battle in the long-run.
