Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are happy at Wrexham, but if the owners ever decided to sell, they would end up with a great deal and one massive obligation.

Since taking over Wrexham in 2020, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds have absolutely transformed the club and have helped the Red Dragons rise through the Football League.

The club is currently fighting for promotion once more, with Wrexham firmly involved in the League One title race as things stand.

Wrexham’s ultimate goal is to reach the Premier League one day, but what would happen if the current Wrexham owners decided to sell up in the near future?

Rob and Ryan won’t leave Wrexham even if they sold the club

Discussing Wrexham’s financial situation on the Price of Football podcast, finance experts Kieran Maguire detailed what a hypothetical change of ownership would look like at Wrexham, and explained why Rob and Ryan would not be going anywhere anytime soon.

Maguire said: “If I was looking to buy, there would have to be something called an earn out… you have to commit to work for the company for the next five years, and the amount we pay will be linked to the profits.

“I would want to buy Wrexham with Rob and Ryan as part of the deal, because they are part of the brand; the pub, the city, the way it’s embraced them as owners is great from a broadcasting point of view. But Wrexham without the two owners is worth substantially less.”

Rob and Ryan have bought into Wrexham’s history in a big way, both financially and emotionally, and the pair are intrinsic to the club’s future, too, whether they like it or not.

Of course, there is nothing to suggest the Hollywood pair are looking to abandon the project anytime soon, and Maguire believes they are in it for the long haul from what he can see.

He added: “To be fair, though, it looks really genuine, in terms of their enjoyment and the support they get and the relationships at the club. I think they will want to stay for life, they would want to keep that relationship. But they could certainly sell and make a profit as part of the brand.”

Why would Rob and Ryan want to leave the Wrexham dream behind?

It’s hard to imagine a world where Rob and Ryan are not involved with Wrexham, and there’s absolutely no reason why they would walk away from this journey now.

The club is thriving in League One and has a brilliant chance of getting a third-successive promotion this year. And off the pitch, relationships within the community are as strong as ever.

Of course, if and when Wrexham do make it to the Championship, there will need to be even more investment in the club, and that’s where external sources of funding may come into play.

Still, Ryan Reynolds has invested in another football club, and he and Rob have even invested in an F1 team over the last year, too. So, there’s clearly no shortage of money to play with, and Wrexham would be a lucrative proposition for anyone looking to get involved, too.
