Wrexham picked up a win over Rotherham United on Saturday afternoon but now face a huge week in the League One promotion race.

Wrexham’s defeat to Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy could have sparked a real wobble.

Phil Parkinson’s side were just minutes away from a Wembley final but threw away a 2-0 lead and lost on penalties.

That would be a hammer blow for any side but Wrexham’s response has been strong.

Three games, three clean sheets, seven points; Wrexham have gone unbeaten since that EFL Trophy defeat.

Wrexham beat Rotherham United 1-0 on Saturday to keep the positive feeling going – and cut the gap to Wycombe Wanderers in the process.

Wycombe Wanderers boss on Wrexham

Wrexham just have to keep the pressure on Wycombe, who have taken control of second place in recent weeks.

Saturday saw Wycombe drop points though as they drew 1-1 with Peterborough United.

It could have been even worse for the Chairboys but Richard Kone’s injury-time leveller salvaged a point.

That result allowed Wrexham to move level on points with Wycombe – and set up a huge week.

Wrexham head to Reading on Tuesday night but then travel to face Wycombe in a real promotion clash next weekend.

Parkinson won’t be looking too far ahead given the trip to Reading comes first, but next weekend is a huge game.

Wycombe don’t have a midweek game, so their attention can fully switch to Wrexham’s visit with boss Mike Dodds now commenting on the game.

Speaking on Wycombe’s official website, Dodds admitted that he and his side are ‘really confident’ ahead of facing Wrexham.

Dodds noted that Parkinson has ‘good players’ in his squad but so do Wycombe, setting up a ‘really good’ advert for League One action.

“We’re really looking forward to it, we’re really confident,” said Dodds.

“They’ve got good players, we’ve got good players, so it will be a really, really good game and a really good advertisement for League One football.

“We’ll be preparing as thoroughly as we have prepared in the previous games since I’ve been here,” he added.

League One promotion race finely poised

Rob McElhenney is backing Wrexham for promotion and this clash with Wycombe will be absolutely vital.

Wrexham go first though with that clash at Reading, where a win would open up a three-point gap ahead of this weekend’s game.

Two wins in the next week would leave Wrexham six points clear of the Chairboys and in pole position for promotion.

That is easier said than done, but Wrexham know that the end goal is moving closer and closer.

Wycombe lost Matt Bloomfield to Luton Town in January and the jury is still out on Dodds as his replacement.

Wrexham must be ready to take advantage of any slip-up and having won on Saturday, there will be confidence in Parkinson’s camp that second place can be secured.
