Fabrizio Romano’s latest update could be good news for Wrexham star Phil Parkinson thinks is ‘outstanding’

Phil Parkinson and another Championship boss are now expected to miss out on one player this summer.

With less than two weeks of the transfer window to go, the Red Dragons have already made an impressive 10 signings.

Callum Doyle joined from Manchester City on Thursday in a deal thought to be somewhere around £7.5m with add-ons.

A week previously, Nathan Broadhead became Wrexham’s record signing when he moved from Ipswich Town.

That record could have been broken again before the September 1 deadline, but it now looks unlikely.

Hull City manager and Wrexham wanted Birmingham City-bound player

Wrexham have been linked with Lewis Koumas of Liverpool for a number of weeks now.

Initially, it was suggested that the Reds could loan the youngster out this summer.

However, reports earlier this week claimed that Wrexham and Birmingham City were eyeing Koumas on a permanent deal worth around £10m.

On Friday morning, Hull City manager Sergej Jakirovic said that the Tigers were interested in the Liverpool gem.

As quoted by Hull Live, he stated: “Yes, but we will see with Liverpool.

“Koumas is a very good player, a young player, with big potential, so we will see. We will see what will happen in the future.”

However, it has now been claimed by Fabrizio Romano that the player has decided to join Birmingham.

Wrexham missing out on Lewis Koumas could benefit Sam Smith

Koumas has spent the bulk of his fairly short career as a centre-forward, scoring 15 in 22.

He has also made 21 appearances as a left-winger and featured 13 times off the right flank.

Had he signed for Wrexham, Parkinson likely would have used him up front, as he does not play wingers.

This would have, along with the arrivals of Kieffer Moore, Broadhead, Ryan Hardie and Josh Windass, created yet more competition for Sam Smith.

Parkinson called Smith ‘outstanding’ following the Dragons’ 3-0 win over Charlton Athletic in April, but despite playing a key role in their League One promotion, the former Reading man starting regularly is by no means guaranteed this season after the influx of new attacking talent.

The above quartet have all surely signed as they expect to play regularly, and adding Koumas into that mix would almost certainly have seen Smith play less.
