Wrexham appear set for a midfield overhaul this summer, with a potential club record signing set to arrive at the Racecourse in the very near future.

Wrexham have lofty plans for this summer, and those plans have already got underway with the signings of Ryan Hardie and Danny Ward.

Last week, Wrexham completed a deal for Ward who joins as a free agent following his exit at Leicester City, returning to his hometown team 13 years after leaving for Liverpool.

And as the Wrexham players gear up for their pre-season tour of Australia, expect Phil Parkinson and his recruitment team to remain hard at work behind the scenes as the Dragons look to make several more signings in the coming weeks.

One name who’s heavily linked right now is Lewis O’Brien. The Nottingham Forest midfielder is poised to leave this summer and Wrexham and several other sides are interested in O’Brien, with the Dragons potentially leading this race.

Elliot Lee will be buzzing if Wrexham sign Lewis O’Brien

Recent reports revealed how Wrexham have agreed a deal to sign O’Brien. It’s said that the Dragons have agreed a club-record £5million fee for the 26-year-old, but that his wages are proving to be a sticking point as things stand.

There certainly seems to be a lot of emphasis on the move and Wrexham could soon make a new big-money signing in their preparations for the Championship. For Parkinson, it would be a coup, and for Elliot Lee it could also be a very good move.

Lee is a huge fan favourite at Wrexham. He scored eight goals in League One last season but that was down from 16 in the season before, and 12 in the season before that.

Having a new midfield partner in O’Brien who’s got that Championship quality, that range of passing and the energy to go with it, could give Lee a new lease of life in the Championship next season, which could see him get back to double figures for goals.

Lewis O’Brien to Wrexham might not be good news for everyone

Whilst the likes of Lee and Wrexham’s attacking and defensive players would benefit from O’Brien’s presence in midfield, it could mean the likes of Andy Cannon and George Evans fall further down the pecking order.

Cannon faces an uncertain summer at Wrexham having spent much of the last season on the sidelines. Meanwhile, George Evans featured just twice from March onwards last time round, not even featuring in any of the last 10 matchday squads.

Already looking like he’s out of favour, the arrival of O’Brien could spell the end of Evans at Racecourse, especially considering that he’s among the Wrexham players out of contract in 2026: so too is Cannon, though Parkinson may be inclined to see how he’s recovered from injury before making a call on him.

Both Evans and Cannon are in the Wrexham squad that’s flown out to Australia for the pre-season tour starting this week.
