Five things learned after Wrexham vs Sheffield Wednesday, key player emerges but Dragons in a rut

Wrexham were held to a 2-2 draw in the Championship against Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

For Phil Parkinson’s side, it’s another disappointing result. Although it’s a first point on the board in the Championship this season, it should have been three.

The Dragons had a 2-0 lead at half-time thanks to a first-half brace from Kieffer Moore, but the Owls dug deep and eventually drew the game 2-2 owing to goals from Barry Bannan and Bailey Cadamarteri.

George Dobson could be a key player for Wrexham this season

Almost every Wrexham player put in a good performance against Sheffield Wednesday, but George Dobson had a particularly good game in the midfield. The 27-year-old was here, there and everywhere, covering his teammates yet providing great attacking opportunities for his teammates.

There’s a huge amount of midfielders at the club currently with some strong competition from names like Elliot Lee and then the returning George Thomason and eventually Ollie Rathbone, but Dobson is putting in a strong case to keep his spot in the side.

Kieffer Moore suits Wrexham’s style of play

Moore is exactly the type of striker that Parkinson loves. The big target man can lead the line tremendously and against Wednesday he took his chances well, scoring his first goals for Wrexham.

Parkinson was impressed with Moore after his Wrexham debut earlier in the month against Southampton and Saturday’s performance was another impressive one for the Welshman, who surely has the confidence now to go on a scoring streak for the Dragons.

Wrexham now have vital squad depth

Wrexham have now signed 10 players this summer, and going into this game with a couple of fresh injuries, it didn’t hinder Parkinson who was able to call on several others. Josh Windass for example missed the game through injury, but club record signing Nathan Broadhead stepped in.

Meanwhile, Liberato Cacace missed the game through injury again, but James McClean stepped in at left-back and was as solid as ever. Parkinson will need to maintain a good level of depth to get through the season without any real squad issues.

Wrexham desperately need Callum Doyle in the side

Wrexham were quality in the first half. They looked like a team ready to shoot up the Championship table but the Dragons were rather shocking in the second half. Defensively, Wrexham were all over the place. Thankfully for the club though, Wrexham have just signed Callum Doyle in an £8m deal from Man City.

It is expected that Doyle will replace Lewis Brunt in the Wrexham line-up and it looks as though the replacement can’t come quick enough. Doyle will bring an extra air of quality and Championship experience to a shaky defence and hopefully help the club towards their first clean sheet of the season.

This could be a long season for Sheffield Wednesday

After three difficult results, with the draw against Sheffield Wednesday arguably being the most difficult given how Wrexham were leading and looking in the clear, it suggests that the Dragons could be in for a very long season. Although it’s still early doors, the early signs are that Wrexham could be loitering around the bottom of the table for a while yet, with some more really tough fixtures on the way.

Whilst there’s still time for the club to sign some new players and time for this new look side to really gel together, the early signs aren’t that promising for the club.
