Forget Arthur Okonkwo, 15-touch Wrexham player who won just one duel was woeful vs Stevenage

Wrexham saw their 22-game unbeaten run at the Racecourse Ground come to an end against Stevenage this week.

Wrexham headed into the game as clear favourites, having last tasted defeat on home soil all the way back in March 2024.

Stevenage have also been dire on the road in 2024/25, scoring just four League One goals when away from home this season.

In turn, it came as quite the shock when the full-time whistle blow and Wrexham lost 3-2 to Stevenage.

It was a game to forget, with Red Dragons fans left furious at Phil Parkinson for his tactics on the night, mainly taking issue with the front two of Elliot Lee and Ollie Palmer.

While the duo underperformed as a pairing once more, however, they were not the worst players on the pitch.

After Arthur Okonkwo, another Wrexham star was poor vs Stevange

The game was all but over after just 18 minutes following two howlers from goalkeeper, Arthur Okonkwo.

The ex-Arsenal man spilled the ball for Stevenage’s opener before getting a weak hand to their second strike of the night.

Okonkwo hasn’t looked at his best since his injury but, barring an ageing Mark Howard, the club doesn’t have a lot of options to replace him right now.

While the goalkeeper is expected to remain in the lineup though, another of the Welsh outfit’s players will surely be dropped this weekend following a dire showing.

Matty James has impressed since signing as a free agent in October, earning himself a new contract until the end of the season.

However, James was well off his game last night and was, in some part, a big reason why Stevenage – who had scored just four away goals before Tuesday – were able to take the game to Wrexham.

Matty James stats for Wrexham vs Stevenage

James has kept a starting berth ahead of the likes of Andy Cannon and George Dobson in recent months.

But the latter was in from the off in midweek, seeing James tasked with sitting as the deepest of Parkinson’s midfield trio.

He really struggled in this role, however, allowing Stevenage to dominate through the centre and failing to keep up with the pace of the game.

Parkinson has discussed Wrexham changes already and it seems obvious James will be dropped for Cannon this weekend.
