Wrexham wanted to sign Michael Smith this month but with that move likely off the cards, there are very few decent alternatives.
It emerged in mid-January that Wrexham want to sign Michael Smith following a failed approach in the summer transfer window.
The Red Dragons are on the lookout for a forward with Championship pedigree and Smith certainly fits that bill.
He may not be setting the second tier alight but six goals and four assists is still a better return than Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer have managed in League One this term.
However, despite Danny Rohl leaving Smith out of a matchday squad following links to the Welsh outfit, a move seems to be off the cards.
Reports this week confirmed Wrexham’s approach for the Sheffield Wednesday striker but also added that a deal is unlikely to happen amid comments from Danny Rohl that suggested he still needs him.

Wrexham alternative to Michael Smith is disappointing
It seems that after also being linked in the summer, Wrexham put all their eggs in the Smith basket once again this month.
Just like 2024, however, they are set to be left disappointed and will be scrambling to sign an alternative option again.
Modou Faal was the alternative in August, and he’s yet to prove himself despite being their record transfer.
Now, another underwhelming addition is likely to be signed in the final few days of the transfer window.
Wrexham were linked with Cauley Woodrow toward the beginning of January and given how hard it is to sign players in the winter, he’s probably the only option left available right now.
However, though he fits the profile of a Championship-level centre-forward, fans probably won’t be very happy if he does arrive.

Cauley Woodrow will have to do for Wrexham
Wrexham fans weren’t happy about links to Smith, but he was probably the best option they could have landed so late in January with teams not expected to be willing to let in-form players move.
Even with a manager change, Woodrow remains out of favour at Luton Town, not playing more than nine minutes of football in one match this month.
This isn’t surprising, however, given in his 15 Championship appearances this season, he’s still yet to find the back of the net.
Another struggling number nine isn’t what Wrexham need right now but of all the options linked, he seems to be the only viable one remaining now a move for Smith is unlikely.
