Wrexham have previously shown interest in Sheffield Wednesday star and Championship legend Barry Bannan, and they could very easily reignite their interest as his departure now looks more likely.

Wrexham have prioritised bringing in Championship experience this summer, with the Red Dragons’ first-team squad receiving serious backing from Dejphon Chansiri.

Phil Parkinson has already added to his ranks with the Championship experience of Ryan Hardie from Plymouth Argyle, and Danny Ward following his Leicester City exit.

Wrexham also completed the exciting acquisition of Nottingham Forest want-away Lewis O’Brien in a £5m deal.

The Red Dragons have been keen to spend money this summer, but also delivered on a shrewd deal to sign Josh Windass from Sheffield Wednesday on a free following his exit from the club. That could not be the only action that Wrexham take with their Championship rivals, with it looking likely that the pursuit of Barry Bannan could be reignited

Further doubt over Barry Bannan future could reignite Wrexham interest

It has been reported by The Star that Sheffield Wednesday captain Barry Bannan has attracted interest from fellow Championship clubs, Middlesbrough and Millwall, with both clubs ‘considering making a move’.

Both teams, alongside several more Championship clubs are growing in confidence over making such a move, with it looking likely that Sheffield Wednesday do not have the financial strength to offer Bannan a new deal.

Bannan is believed to have shown a clear desire to stay at Sheffield Wednesday this season, but with the 2025/26 Championship campaign fast approaching, he may be forced into a move. Wrexham will no doubt be made aware of the Scotsman’s current situation, and could easily further pursue their interest.

Wrexham have ace card in Barry Bannan pursuit

As Barry Bannan looks set to be forced in a move away from Sheffield Wednesday, his path could lead towards the Racecourse Ground.

One man could easily play a significant role in enticing Bannan to join Wrexham, and that is Red Dragons signing Josh Windass, who played alongside each other at Sheffield Wednesday.

Following Windass’ Sheffield Wednesday exit announcement on social media, Owls legend and captain Bannan, in response, wrote: “What a player and guy u will be missed a friend forever,” accompanied by the sad face and love heart emojis.

Bannan is not used to change in his career, having spent 10 years at Sheffield Wednesday, so a move alongside Windass could cushion the blow of his departure from Hillsborough.
