Matty James has been a revelation since moving to Wrexham in October 2024.
Matty James has had a long and illustrious playing career, including featuring in Manchester United’s youth ranks and being on Leicester City’s books when they won the Premier League title.
2023/24 saw the midfielder plying his trade in the Championship with Bristol City, who then released him when his contract expired over the summer.
However, Wrexham then signed the 33-year-old to a short-term contract in October of last year.
His deal was due to expire at the end of December, but he has earned a new contract and will stay at the Racecourse Ground until at least the end of 2024/25.
Phil Parkinson labelled James ‘outstanding’ in November and he has now firmly cemented himself as a crucial cog in the Red Dragons’ midfield, which might not be great news for one player.

Matty James new Wrexham role bad for one player
James was brought to the club as Andy Cannon and George Dobson were both close to suspension, while James Jones and Geroge Evans had injury problems.
It was a solid short-term solution but now the ex-Manchester United man is staying for the second half of 2024/25 and already a very important player, Parkinson will need to rejig his midfield.
Already we have seen Dobson’s playing time reduced in the last few weeks, with James performing much better in his role.
Meanwhile, summer addition Ollie Rathbone has found his feet after a slow start and Cannon remains a useful option.
In turn, there no longer seems to be any room in the squad for George Evans, who made 35 appearances in 2023/24 and was dubbed a ‘real talent’.
James, Dobson, Rathbone, Cannon and Elliot Lee are all clearly ahead of him in the pecking order, while Jones and youngster Harry Ashfield are solid backup options.
Evans is tied down till 2026 but it would make sense for Wrexham to move him on this month in order to try and make some sort of profit from him before clubs begin to realise he’s now surplus to requirements.

How much is Wrexham midfielder George Evans worth
Evans joined Wrexham on a free transfer from Championship club Millwall in September 2023.
Shortly after his arrival, Transfmarkt valued the midfielder at £300,000.
His value remained the same for much of 2024 but it has now dropped down to £250,000.
That is still a decent sum for a club like Wrexham and would make Evans their 11th-most expensive sale just behind Dennis Lawrence.
