With the January transfer window approaching, there is an opportunity for Wrexham to improve their squad. Here are three players Phil Parkinson could let go to make space for new additions.
It has been a positive campaign for Wrexham so far with the Reds currently occupying second place in League Two.
Under the management of Phil Parkinson, the club have been on the rise going from the National League back to the EFL.
With some star performances this season, back-to-back promotions look completely possible right now. The January transfer window will provide an opportunity to add to the squad and improve their chances for the second half of the season.
On the flip side, to bring new players in, others will have to depart. With that being said, let’s take a look at three Wrexham players that could depart in January…
1. Callum McFadzean
At the beginning of the campaign, there was a decision to be made as Parkinson had to leave out three names for his League Two squad. Unfortunately for Callum McFadzean, he was one of those.

The defender’s contract does expire this coming summer so a January move wouldn’t come as a surprise to most. Given that he has only made three appearances for the Reds this campaign, a departure makes sense for all parties.
Following his move to North Wales on a free transfer, he has gone on to make 55 appearances in all competitions. He has been a useful player but following the signing of Jacob Mendy last season, the writing has been on the wall.
2. Billy Waters
Billy Waters was signed after a good spell with Barrow in League Two. With nine goals in 34 games, he dropped down a division with a good pedigree. It just hasn’t gone right for him as he hasn’t scored for the Reds.
Another man who hasn’t been included in Parkinson’s squad for the season, his confidence will have taken a knock. A loan move away from Wrexham could help him rediscover the form that he has shown in the past.
Time away could see him get some minutes under his belt. This could see him, upon his return, become an important player at The Racecourse in seasons to come.
3. Liam McAlinden
Like McFadzean, Liam McAlinden is out of contract at the end of the current campaign. He could be let go as a result. He is a useful utility man who helps to provide depth in a variety of positions for Parkinson’s side.

All but two of his six appearances this season have come in cup competitions. This sums up his role as a squad player. He did play his part in the National League, most often as a sub where he was able to help rescue points for Wrexham.
Given his contract situation and the direction that the Reds are looking to go in, McAlinden doesn’t seem to have a place moving forward. Although he adds cover, it is unlikely that he will be happy to be third or fourth choice.
