Wrexham are in danger of seeing their push for automatic promotion slip away but Phil Parkinson has hinted at making changes.

Wrexham face Crawley Town in a League One meeting on Saturday afternoon, looking to bounce back from a nightmare showing last time out.

The Red Dragons faithful watched on as their side put on arguably their worst display of the season so far, losing 3-2 to Stevenage at the Racecourse Ground.

It brought an end to a 22-game unbeaten run in Wales and has seen fan ire grow a great deal.

After the match, Wrexham fans hit out at Phil Parkinson and his tactics, mainly taking issue with his two-man strike force of Ollie Palmer and Elliot Lee.

Attack has been a major area of concern for the Hollywood-owned club this season but after losing in midweek, Parkinson hinted at Wrexham changes.

Exactly what they will be is not yet known, but if Parkinson makes one bold tactical decision, it could be very bad news for Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer.

Phil Parkinson could change Wrexham formation in blow to Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer

Wrexham are set to sign Sam Smith in a club-record deal believed to be worth around £2m.

The 26-year-old has 11 goals in League One already this season and is likely to come straight into the eleven.

However, even if Smith signs and excels, it may not be enough to fix Wrexham’s attacking woes, which have been evident all season and left fans frustrated.

As a result, with Parkinson now hinting at changes, Wrexham could perhaps look to move away from their traditional 5-3-2 to a 4-2-3-1 system.

On paper, this should allow the Red Dragons to play on the front foot a lot more but does likely mean Mullin and Palmer have no future at the club.

How Wrexham could line up in new formation

Now Ryan Longman has arrived, Wrexham actually have some options on the wings this season.

In turn, Longman could operate on the right-hand side ahead of Ryan Barnett, while James McClean could be pushed into a left-wing role, as he’s played previously, with Jacob Mendy slotting in at left-back.

Lee can then revert back into his favoured number 10 slot, while Smith becomes Wrexham’s primary striker.

On paper, he should be able to rotate with Jack Marriott, while Steven Fletcher keeps his role as an impact sub for the final 25/30 minutes of a game.

Modou Faal would likely need to be loaned if this change is made and Palmer and Mullin would become surpluses to requirements.
