Wrexham have completed their second signing of the January transfer window, landing Sam Smith from Reading.

It has been a long time coming but the Red Dragons have finally got a striker signing over the line.

Wrexham have been linked with Michael Smith for much of the transfer window but a deal for the Championship forward now looks unlikely.

On the back of Michael’s move falling apart, it was reported on Thursday that the Red Dragons wanted to sign Sam Smith from Reading.

The Royals have a transfer embargo and cannot replace the 26-year-old in the winter window as a result.

But that didn’t stop the Welsh outfit pushing forward, with it now confirmed on Friday that Wrexham have signed Smith.

Wrexham fans react after Sam Smith joins from Reading

The move for the centre-forward is expected to see Wrexham break their transfer record, paying around £2m for the striker.

Following the news, fans of the Hollywood-owned club have taken to social media to share their verdict on their latest addition.

One fan wrote: “A striker that hasn’t yet hit his prime, sensational stuff!”

A second replied: “Welcome to Wrexham and Wales Sam,” while another simply reacted: “Get in!!!!!!”

Another added: “Welcome to Wrexham Sam Smith, 3.5 year deal Go and be a hero!”

A fifth supporter stated: “Knowing Rob McElhenney‘s enthusiasm for his beloved Wrexham, I guess he’s got a smile as wide as the Atlantic right now.”

A sixth Wrexham fan joked: “Not the Sam Smith I was expecting.”

While a seventh stated: “If he can live up to price tag he’ll be in that box waiting for the ball from Ryan down the wing or any of our midfielders and will strike it home and hopefully give likes of Mullin and Marriott some confidence to.”

Sam Smith record compared to Wrexham strikers

Wrexham fans were left waiting but the club have finally delivered an in-form striker to aid their promotion push for the remainder of the season.

Smith has 11 goals and two assists in 25 league games this term – a record that dwarfs any of the clubs’ current options.

Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer are both sitting on three goals each, Jack Marriott has five and Steven Fletcher is the top-scoring centre-forward with six.

Modou Faal hasn’t scored in League One yet and will likely be loaned out before deadline day comes to a close.
