Phil Parkinson could turn to a former Arthur Okonkwo alternative to solve Wrexham’s goalkeeper crisis

The Red Dragons cemented their promotion credentials with a 1-0 win over Barnsley on Tuesday, but an injury sustained in the first half may be the biggest takeaway from the match.

Wrexham’s 1-0 victory over Barnsley took Wrexham just two points behind the League One leaders, Wycombe, who dropped points against Exeter City.

Hollywood star Danny DeVito watched Wrexham vs Barnsley alongside Rob McElhenney, but both would’ve been concerned early on as Callum Burton suffered an injury.

Burton appeared to be clutching his hamstring after he went down in the 23rd minute against Barnsley, eventually being replaced by veteran shot-stopper, Mark Howard.

With number one goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo’s injury as well, Phil Parkinson will be waiting with bated breath to find out whether he is to be left with only one fit senior goalkeeper left in the Wrexham squad.

If this is to be the case, Parkinson may need to look for another option between the sticks in January, with one previously linked goalkeeper looking like a particularly appealing option.

Wrexham could target Marko Marosi once more

With Burton sent for a scan on his injury, Parkinson and Wrexham are in limbo as to whether they’ll need to act in the transfer market in regards to a goalkeeper. The Wrexham owners won’t want to be caught out, though, and will likely be planning ahead in the case of the worst.

One option could well be Marko Marosi, who was in the running to be signed in the summer as an alternative to Okonkwo.

Wrexham have been linked with Marosi already, so the club should already know all about his talents, boasting over 300 senior appearances with the majority coming in League One with Shrewsbury Town.

He would certainly be a safe option for Parkinson, perhaps an even stronger backup to Okonkwo when he returns to fitness than Burton has been.

Such a talented goalkeeper may not want to be a backup, but Marosi’s current contractual situation may give Wrexham a way to secure him, regardless of his role in the squad.

Marosi will be available for free in January

Surprisingly, Marosi was not picked up to be a number-one goalkeeper by a League One side, eventually settling for an emergency cover move to Championship strugglers, Plymouth Argyle.

According to Plymouth’s official announcement of the signing, however, the Slovak goalkeeper is only contracted until January, which could perfectly align with Wrexham’s current injury crisis.

He hasn’t made a single appearance for The Pilgrims since September, joining only to cover for early injuries to other backup goalkeepers.

Therefore, a move to Wrexham may appeal to Marosi. If Burton is to be out for a while, he may see some first-team action whilst Okonkwo builds back his fitness. Wrexham also qualified for the EFL Trophy knockout stages, giving him further opportunities to play.

Of course, Parkinson and his Wrexham coaching staff will be hoping that Burton’s injury is nothing serious, but an option as strong as Marosi to turn to is certainly appealing.
