Phil Parkinson has now surely sent a message to ‘irreplaceable’ Wrexham star after latest decision

Wrexham produced a dramatic comeback in stoppage time to grab their first win of the season against Hull City in the EFL Cup.

With Phil Parkinson’s side 3-1 down heading into eight minutes of added on time, substitute Ollie Palmer scored two headers to send the game to penalties.

Wrexham fans were delighted for Palmer and the striker also scored in the shoot-out before Jack Marriott struck the winning penalty to send Wrexham through to round two.

Parkinson made eleven changes to his side from the opening league defeat at Southampton and one selection decision has surely sent a message to a player that his future lies elsewhere this summer.

Thomas O’Connor omitted from Wrexham squad for EFL Cup clash

Thomas O’Connor was once described as ‘irreplaceable’ to Wrexham but the defender has now failed to feature in each of Parkinson’s squads this season.

The EFL Cup tie with Hull was an opportunity for players who did not start the game against Southampton to impress and get some minutes under their belt and O’Connor was not even named in the squad.

Young defender Aaron James was given a start ahead of the 26-year-old in what is surely a clear message that a summer transfer away from North Wales should now be on the cards.

Parkinson needs to trim his squad before having to name a 25-man squad at the end of the window and O’Connor would represent a player the club can receive a fee for.

There was previous interest in the defender from the likes of Championship rivals Coventry City and the Red Dragons are seemingly now open to offers.

Who else could join Thomas O’Connor in facing the exit door at Wrexham?

It has been confirmed that Sebastian Revan has joined Burton Albion on loan for the upcoming season but there will be more joining O’Connor out the exit door.

Several clubs want Jacob Mendy on loan and the wing-back is another player who hasn’t featured in either of the squads named by Parkinson so far this campaign.

Parkinson has told Palmer he can leave this summer, although his heroics against Hull coupled with the injuries to Kieffer Moore and Jay Rodriguez may delay that stance.

In addition, there is a chance that Elliot Lee could leave the club this summer given that opportunities in the first-team are likely to be few and far between for the midfielder.
