Wrexham are back in action once again on Wednesday night as Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough United visit the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham must put the League One promotion race to one side on Wednesday night.

The EFL Trophy takes full focus for Phil Parkinson with Peterborough Untied standing in the way of a trip to Wembley.

This is the semi-final stage of the EFL Trophy and Wrexham can tee up a final meeting with Birmingham City.

Darren Ferguson wants to prevent a ‘Hollywood final’ but has accepted that their League One game with Shrewsbury Town this weekend is more important.

This is a golden opportunity for Wrexham and it’s one Phil Parkinson will be looking to seize – even if he shakes up his starting XI.

Phil Parkinson could freshen Wrexham side up again

Wrexham put in hard yards against Mansfield Town on Sunday as this relentless period of games just continues.

Parkinson made changes to the Wrexham lineup against Mansfield, shaking things up a little.

Ryan Longman started at right wing back in place of Ryan Barnett whilst Sebastian Revan impressed Parkinson with his display at left wing back.

Parkinson is trying to rotate and keep the Wrexham side fresh, all whilst treating every game with the respect it deserves.

Wrexham play at 12:30pm UK time on Saturday too, so there is a quick turnaround after this game.

Changes are to be expected but Wrexham must still name a strong side when a trip to Wembley is on the line.

The Wrexham boss will again consider changes against Peterborough and he faces a tough call on Jay Rodriguez.

Phil Parkinson faces tough Jay Rodriguez decision

The veteran striker joined Wrexham from Burnley in January, providing experience from the Premier League, Championship and even the international stage.

So far though, Rodriguez has struggled to make an impact for Wrexham and is yet to find the net since his move.

Many Wrexham fans have not been impressed with Rodriguez so far and Parkinson must weigh up whether to throw him in against Peterborough.

On the one hand, starting Rodriguez would give him another chance to get off the mark and ultimately build up his sharpness.

The 35-year-old started just eight Championship games for Burnley before heading to Wrexham, so it’s reasonable to expect him to be a little rusty.

Rodriguez has been branded ‘unbelievable’ by Sam Smith but needs minutes to get up to speed and Wrexham ultimately need him firing as the League One promotion race heats up.

On the other hand, Wrexham have so many strikers to try and give minutes to and the EFL Trophy provides the perfect opportunity for them.

Paul Mullin, Steven Fletcher, Jack Marriott and Modou Faal will all be desperate to start whilst the exiled Ollie Palmer will be knocking on the door too.

In the last round of the EFL Trophy, it was Marriott and Faal leading the attack with Rodriguez and Sam Smith on the bench.

Parkinson will be weighing up whether to change things up again or give Rodriguez another chance to really ignite his Wrexham career.

We would lean towards leaving Rodriguez on the bench and bringing other players into the XI before starting Rodriguez against Bolton Wanderers this weekend, but Parkinson has an embarrassment of riches in attack; quite the headache for him ahead of facing the Posh.
