Wrexham were due to face off with Port Vale in an EFL Trophy clash on Tuesday evening but the game was postponed.

The Red Dragons saw off Peterborough United by one goal to nil over the weekend and have now been given an extended break.

Wrexham face Shrewsbury Town on January 16th upon their return to action after their meeting with Port Vale was postponed.

The Welsh outfit are looking to secure their first cup since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over in 2021 but will have to wait a little while longer before trying to book their place in the next round of the EFL Trophy.

Parkinson will likely welcome this unexpected break from action, giving his squad a much-needed rest following a busy festive period.

But the call to cancel the Port Vale tie does mean one Wrexham player may now have already played his last game for the club.

Wrexham star could have already played last game following Port Vale postponement

The January transfer window is in full swing and the Red Dragons are expected to be active on the incomings front.

However, a report from The Athletic at the end of 2024 claimed nine Wrexham players could leave this winter.

Among the names tipped to depart the Racecourse Ground was central midfielder, James Jones.

Parkinson suggested Jones would feature versus Port Vale this week but now that game’s been cancelled, it’s hard to see him making another appearance this month.

The 28-year-old has only notched 26 minutes of action in League One this term, largely been utlised for rotation purposes in cup competitions.

Now though, with a January exit touted and no cup game to play, Jones’ appearance in the 1-0 win over Crewe Alexandra on December 10th may prove to be his final outing for Wrexham.

Jones joined Wrexham from Lincoln City in August 2021 for an undisclosed fee.

He was a key player for Parkinson during his first season at the club, making 38 National League appearances and scoring five goals.

Jones was labelled ‘sensational’ in 2024 but his game time in Wales has steadily reduced with each passing season.

And with the arrivals of George Dobson and Matty James in 2024, he has been pushed firmly down the pecking order.
