Wrexham continue to actively build their squad with the Championship campaign drawing ever closer.

With the squad now back in the UK, preparations are intensifying with the season opener at Southampton less than three weeks away.

Phil Parkinson is eager to add quality to his squad and Wrexham have signed George Thomason from former League One rivals Bolton Wanderers.

After securing Liberato Cacace, the Red Dragons were dealt some bad news in that Owen Beck has joined Derby County. Parkinson wants another versatile left-sided defender and Wrexham Insider has picked out three alternatives for the boss.

Three Wrexham alternatives to Owen Beck

Jamal Lewis

Jamal Lewis arrived at Newcastle back in 2020 as one of the most promising young left backs in the Premier League.

However, injuries have really hampered his progress in recent seasons and subsequent loan moves to Watford and Sao Paulo have not been able to rejuvenate his career on Tyneside.

The 27-year-old was once described as an ‘incredible athlete’ by his manager Eddie Howe as per the Shields Gazette and the player is now available on a free transfer.

Lewis would provide excellent competition and back-up for James McClean and much like Cacace, can play at left centre-back or at left wing-back.

Alfie Doughty

Alfie Doughty has been Luton Town’s most consistent performer over the last two seasons, despite the club’s successive relegations.

The 25-year-old has an incredible engine to get up and down the left flank and would be ideal for Parkinson’s system.

Doughty is known for his excellent deliveries into the box and the likes of Ryan Hardie and Sam Smith would be licking their lips at the prospect of his arrival.

The Luton defender can also play on the right flank, meaning his versatility would be useful should injuries hit to Ryan Barnett or Ryan Longman.

Harry Amass

Harry Amass made seven appearances under Ruben Amorim in the Manchester United first-team last season and impressed with his maturity and energy at left back.

The 18-year-old has not been named in United’s pre-season squad to tour America and the youngster will be allowed to leave on loan this summer.

Parkinson has been reluctant to loan players in the past, however, this could prove an intelligent solution to an area that he wants to strengthen, without denting the transfer budget too much.

Wrexham want Premier League experience in their squad for the upcoming campaign and despite only being 18, Amass has proven he is good enough to gain that.
