Wrexham are heading into the international break after a mixed start to their Championship campaign.

After back-to-back defeats to open the campaign, Phil Parkinson’s side rallied to draw at home to Sheffield Wednesday before an excellent 2-0 win at Millwall.

Wrexham have added thirteen new additions to their squad in the summer transfer window and can now use the break to build a better cohesion and understanding within the side.

Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have shown their ambition to keep progressing the club and Wrexham Insider has identified three players ready to be at the heart of the Red Dragons’ quest for promotion this season.

Three Wrexham players set for important roles under Phil Parkinson this season

Parkinson will have to exclude four players from his 25-man squad for the Championship and certainly has the numbers and depth to keep the Red Dragons competitive this campaign.

However, having spent almost £40m, there is an expectation that Wrexham will be aiming for the higher reaches of the division.

The likes of Lewis O’Brien and Conor Coady have already shown that they will be highly influential but every team has a cluster of surprise packages that step up to the plate when needed.

Wrexham’s owners want Premier League football by 2027, here are three members of Parkinson’s squad that are set for pivotal roles this season to achieve that ambitious target.

Kieffer Moore

Wrexham fans were delighted with the signing of Kieffer Moore during the summer in a £2m deal from Sheffield United despite jibes from rival fans.

Moore has hit the ground running in North Wales proving that he is the ideal striker for Parkinson’s system and has already notched four goals for the club.

One included a last minute winner in the Carabao Cup over Preston and another a brave header to set up the club’s first win in the Championship for 43 years.

Keeping him fit will be key to Wrexham’s success but the Red Dragons know they have a dominant focal point to their attack, who knows how to win promotion from this division.

Ben Sheaf

One of three deadline signings, Ben Sheaf could prove to be a shrewd piece of business from Parkinson after securing a £6.5m deal.

Sheaf’s transfer has been widely praised as he provides an excellent option at the base of Wrexham’s midfield.

He knows the division like the back of his hand and can be the perfect foil for the likes of O’Brien and Josh Windass to create around him.

There were times in the opening games of the season where Wrexham’s midfield looked to lack mobility and control of the game, Sheaf prevents that problem repeating itself immediately.

Liberato Cacace

Liberato Cacace signalled a change in transfer direction from the club as he arrived from Serie A at the start of the summer window.

Eyebrows were raised when he started the first game of the season ahead of James McClean but he showed in that game what an excellent player Wrexham have on their hands.

Defensively solid and intelligent, Cacace also has the ability to create chances at the other end with his energy and quality on the ball.

Cacace has been backed to be a key player for Parkinson this season and after his first two appearances, you wouldn’t bet against him being just that.
