Three Wrexham stars who could make a huge impact in the US amid Paul Mullin’s absence

Wrexham will head on their pre-season tour of the United States without star striker Paul Mullin, so that could open up the door for other players to step up.

Last summer, Wrexham striker Paul Mullin suffered a punctured lung as Manchester United goalkeeper Nathan Bishop crashed into him.

This was during the Reds pre-season tour of the United States, where Mullin was fresh from firing 46 goals in all competitions to help Phil Parkinson’s men win promotion to League Two.

Wrexham have landed in the US once again but this time around, they’ll be without their star striker, who is currently recovering from back surgery.

Supporters in the US were left saddened by this news as they’d have been excited to see him in action, so with that said, here are three other players who can make an impact instead.

George Dobson

Starting on Friday, July 19th, Wrexham will play against Bournemouth before clashing with Chelsea and the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Ahead of this testing trip, the Welsh side have confirmed five new signings, including midfielder George Dobson, who arrived on a free transfer.

Dobson was scheduled to join Hungarian side Fehervar on a pre-contract agreement after leaving Charlton Athletic however, the player changed his mind and instead linked up with former manager Parkinson.

A robust and tough tackling midfielder, who has racked up 265 appearances in League One, the 26-year-old’s performances against the likes of Bournemouth and Chelsea will be an audition for the season to come.

Whilst supporters in the US will miss the striking attributes of Mullin, they can instead take in the tigerish displays of Dobson, who will be desperate to leave his mark.

Elliot Lee

Elliot Lee’s importance to the Wrexham squad is on a similar level to Mullin.

The West Ham academy graduate has proven to be a goal-scoring machine from midfield, plundering 12 goals in the 2022/23 National League title win and then improving on that total with 16 in League Two last term.

At the start of last season when Mullin was sidelined for the first eight games, Lee had to step up and carry the scoring burden, doing so successfully.

The 29-year-old bagged seven goals and grabbed two assists in his first eight matches, including a brace in the 5-5 draw against Swindon Town.

In those moments, Lee proved he could step up when it matters and in friendlies against superior opposition, supporters will be dying to see those ‘fantastic’ attacking qualities in the US.

Jack Marriott

Jack Marriott was brought into Wrexham on transfer deadline day from League One side Fleetwood Town.

Marriott is a former Golden Boot winner with Peterborough United, although he’s failed to translate such scoring powers across to Wales, starting just three times and scoring once.

The striker’s lack of game time is mainly down to Mullin being an immovable object, with the 29-year-old settling for minutes from the bench instead.

With Mullin sidelined for the first few games of 2024/25 at least, that could be about to change, as Marriott is the leading candidate to replace him.

For the first time in the flesh, supporters in the US should get an opportunity to see the English talisman up close and this is where he must take his chance to shine in pre-season while showing why Wrexham were right to sign him.
