Wrexham are set to say goodbye to one of the club’s greatest ever partnerships.

Paul Mullin is set to join Wigan Athletic on a season-long loan as his Wrexham exile finally looks to have reached a conclusion.

Phil Parkinson has told Ollie Palmer he can leave the club as fans prepare for an emotional farewell to a duo that have scored a combined 147 goals for the Red Dragons.

The departures come as Wrexham signed Ryan Hardie to add to their attacking options for their Championship campaign and the club will be hoping the new addition can strike up a new partnership.

What Phil Parkinson once said about Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin partnership

Mullin and Palmer were an instant hit together up top and their playing styles complemented each other perfectly to fire the Red Dragons to two successive promotions into League One.

Parkinson explained Mullin and Palmer’s absence last season but he will be hoping that what he once said about the duo can happen again with new arrival Hardie and record signing Sam Smith.

Speaking on ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ season 1 episode 12, the boss discussed how Palmer’s arrival gave his strike partner a lift and will be hoping for the same impact once again.

Parkinson stated: “Ollie Palmer has been fantastic for us and I think he gave Paul Mullin a huge lift coming in. It’s a partnership we envisaged and has shown a lot of signs that it is going to be a successful one for the club for both short and long term.”

How Ryan Hardie will work with Sam Smith in Wrexham’s attack

Smith has a point to prove in the Championship having failed to make an impact in the second tier during the early stages of his career.

Parkinson has a variety of options with Hardie but will surely begin the season with the 28-year-old alongside Smith in attack.

Hardie had an impressive record as a number ten playing under Miron Muslic at Plymouth but Parkinson will be keen to unleash his pace and power in a more advanced role.

Both Hardie and Smith like to press from the front and if the Red Dragons can add more energy in midfield this summer, there may be a more front-foot approach from the team next season.
