Wrexham could now sign 82-goal free agent this month – he’d be the icing on the cake for Phil Parkinson

Wrexham should be pleased with their January transfer business but one area of Phil Parkinson’s squad could still be strengthened.

After a productive summer, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds got their hands in their pockets once more to back the Red Dragons well in 2025.

Ryan Longman joined Wrexham in a £500,000 deal, strengthening the club’s backline well and adding an extra layer of attacking threat out wide.

Longman already has three assists to his name in just three appearances and his creativity will hopefully lead to plenty of goals from their two other winter additions.

Sam Smith was signed in a record deal from Reading, bringing with him an excellent goal return this season – 11 already in League One.

Further attacking reinforcements arrived shortly after, with the experience of Jay Rodriguez likely to prove vital to the club’s promotion push in the remainder of the campaign.

Jamie Paterson would be excellent addition for Wrexham

While centre-forward was the main area of concern for Wrexham in the most recent transfer window though, most fans probably agree another attacking midfielder to rival Elliot Lee was needed.

Midfield is a well-stocked position but we have seen during his time out injured this campaign that the Red Dragons lack creativity through the middle without Lee.

In turn, while the proper transfer window is shut, Wrexham could turn to the free-agent market to bring in a number 10 who can compete with the eight-goal ace for the rest of 2024/25.

And the perfect player is now available after being released by his previous club at the beginning of the year.

Jamie Paterson last plied his trade in the MLS with Charlotte but he’s an English player with a plethora of experience in the Championship and given Wrexham have been keen to sign players proven at a higher level, he would be a great fit.

He’s enjoyed spells at the likes of Huddersfield Town, Bristol City, and Nottingham Forest and has been prolific when playing as a 10 or a second-striker.

Wrexham 22-man League One squad needs changing

Wrexham have to register their updated 22-man League One squad for the rest of 2024/25 shortly.

After the three arrivals over the winter, Phil Parkinson will have to drop one player to meet the requirements.

Given his lack of playing time and competition for places, Will Boyle seems like the obvious option.

But even with one star needing to be dropped already, there is still room for Wrexham to improve their squad in the free-agent market, it would just mean another player being axed.

The obvious options, on top of Boyle, would be Luke Bolton – now fourth-choice right-wing-back behind Ryan Barnett, Longman and Sebastian Revan – and George Evans.

Evans has been a key player in the past but injury has hampered him in 2024/25 and he did little to stake a claim for more regular football against Port Vale on Tuesday.
