Why Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer were kept at Wrexham amid transfer interest, ‘crucial’ point made

The futures of Ollie Palmer and Paul Mullin at Wrexham were called into question during the final days of the winter transfer window.

Wrexham are flying high at the top end of League One this season but they have struggled on the goal front.

Midfielder Elliot Lee is the club’s top scorer in all competitions, while centre-back Max Cleworth is also near the top of the list with six to his name.

In the first half of 2024/25, both Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer had a hard time finding the back of the net in League One.

The duo have both managed just three apiece – a far cry from returns we have seen from them in previous campaigns, especially Mullin.

In turn, as was to be expected, Wrexham made two striker signings in the 2025 January transfer window, adding Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez to their ranks shortly before deadline day.

Verdict given as Paul Mullin and Ollie Palmer remain at Wrexham

Once Smith and Rodriguez had signed, it left Wrexham with a staggering seven centre-forwards on their books.

Even with two starting every match, it seemed like at least one of them would have to leave on or before February 3rd.

It emerged late last week that Mullin and Palmer had transfer interest from multiple clubs in the EFL.

However, neither of the centre-forwards departed the Racecourse and will now be at the club until the end of 2024/25 at least.

It was a surprising call from Wrexham to keep seven strikers, but transfer expert Graeme Bailey has now weighed in on the situation when speaking to TWI, stating he can see why the duo were kept and adding that their goals could be ‘crucial’ to their promotion push.

He said: “Forwards are very important – I can see why they kept both players, they can still play a role in getting Wrexham up, the odd goal here and there could be crucial.”

Paul Mullin injury update

After talk of potential exits, both strikers were left out of the matchday squad for the win over Crawley Town.

Palmer has since come off the bench for the final 30 minutes when Wrexham beat Port Vale on Tuesday, replacing star man, Harry Ashfield.

Mullin did not feature at all, however, but that is because he has been carrying a shin injury.

Parkinson provided an injury update on the Wrexham striker over the weekend, however, confirming it’s nothing major.

He said: “It’s just a minor problem with Mulls. I said ‘until we get that scan, I don’t want to put you at risk because we’ve got a lot of football to play’. Hopefully it’s nothing serious, I don’t think it is. It just wasn’t quite right.

“When you’ve got players like Jack [Marriott] and Fletch [Steven Fletcher] and the options we’ve got, there’s no need to risk a player. They were right with the lads in the dressing room, and all of the lads who didn’t make the bench like George Evans and [Jacob] Mendy, right with us, that’s what we’ve always been about.

“We’ve got a lot of games left and everyone’s going to be utilised.”
