Wrexham are setting their bar high ahead of the summer transfer window. But some signings seem to make a lot more sense than others for Phil Parkinson.
Phil Parkinson is quickly adding new players to his list of Wrexham transfer targets ahead of the summer, and there’s some very exciting names being linked with potential moves to the Racecourse.
One such name is Tom Cairney. It’s been reported that Wrexham have offered Cairney a contract to join this summer, and it would see him earn a club record high of £50,000-a-week, suggesting that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are ready to break the bank this summer.
He’d add definite quality and experience to the side and that’s exactly what Parkinson wants this summer. One thing he doesn’t want is any sort of glamour signings, with Parkinson ruling out signing any superstars at Wrexham this summer.
Another new name has just been linked, and whilst not a superstar as such, he’s got great experience and great pedigree. But for a number of reasons, Parkinson must steer clear of this potential deal.

Wrexham have just been linked with Danny Ings
Danny Ings, now 32, is out of contract at West Ham this summer. The three-time former England striker, who’s played for the likes of Burnley, Liverpool, Southampton, and Aston Villa in his career, has now been mentioned as a potential target for both Birmingham City and Wrexham following their promotions to the Championship.
Speaking to EFL analysis, transfer expert Graeme Bailey revealed: “There are a lot of options out there. I wouldn’t necessarily rule Burnley out of the equation. Again, we know he’s obviously had time there and did well. I think he’s another one [like Jamie Vardy] who is on the cusp; does he go to a Premier League club or maybe a top of the Championship club?
“Again, I wouldn’t rule him out of the Birmingham and Wrexham conversations at all. I think there are a lot of options out there for Danny Ings and he’s just weighing them up. Again, a bit like Vardy, I think he’d rather be in the Premier League, but he may have to drop down.”

Three reasons why Wrexham must avoid a deal for Danny Ings this summer
Danny Ings has a poor injury record
Ings would be a massive signing for any club in the Championship. But a massive risk too: he’s had no end of injuries in the last few seasons with issues with hamstrings and knees, having not made more than 20 league appearances in any of his last four seasons playing in the Premier League.
Danny Ings is earning crazy money at West Ham right now
Ings is out of contract this summer and the Hammers might be delighted to finally get him off their books, with Capology putting his weekly wage a staggering £120,000-a-week.
Inevitably, at 32 and having not exactly been prolific for a while now, Ings will have to take a pay cut to join another club this summer. But even going off a rumoured £50,000-a-week for Cairney which may or may not be true, Ings looks like someone who’d still be out of Wrexham’s price range, and who’d just be too expensive of a risk for Parkinson.
Danny Ings’ scoring form over the last few seasons is questionable
In the last three seasons with West Ham, Ings has admittedly played a rather rational role. But in 52 total Premier League appearances for the club he’s scored just four goals, with one in 15 Premier League games this season.
The last time he scored 10 or more league goals in a single campaign was with Southampton back in the 2020/21 season. Whilst he might find it easier dropping down to the Championship, there’d be huge questions marks about whether he’d score enough goals to justify his wages.
