Wrexham have spent wisely in the last 12 months, with standout arrival Ollie Rathbone earning praise from Phil Parkinson this week.

After securing promotion to League One in 2024, Wrexham set about overhauling their squad in the summer window.

A number of players were released, while there were plenty of arrivals at the Racecourse Ground, including Ollie Rathbone in what was, at least for a couple of weeks, a record transfer.

Rathbone has shone for Wrexham and scored a stunning effort as League One promotion was secured over the weekend against Charlton Athletic.

After stepping up another level, it is imperative the Red Dragons, as they have so often done, nail their recruitment once more in the coming months.

Phil Parkinson on Wrexham recruitment policy

Wrexham were linked to Jamie Vardy after it was confirmed the striker will leave Leicester City as a free agent.

Tom Lawrence is an option for the Welsh outfit on a free as well with his Rangers deal to due expire in June.

Now, Phil Parkinson has been highlighting, as per Leader Live, exactly the type of player Wrexham do not want to be recruiting.

He said: “No superstars, no egos in the dressing room and we’ve got to try and get that balance right again where you always need extra quality when you go up a a level, but make sure that they are the right people coming into the building.”

Ollie Rathbone top example of Wrexham transfer success

Since Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds took over at the Racecourse, transfer failures have been few and far between.

One of the best deals sanctioned by the Hollywood duo, however, has been Rathbone’s move from Rotherham United.

On the midfielder, Parkinson added: “We’ve done it this year, with Ollie Rathbone for instance. He typifies everything you want in a player, in terms of the buy into the culture and the work we expect from the players.

“You want the quality, you want the special moments, but Ollie has typified the recruitment policy we’ve had and how he’s fitted into the group.”
