‘He had a difficult season’… Phil Parkinson admits he feels sorry for Wrexham player who’s now set to leave

Wrexham have released eight players ahead of the 2025/26 season, with some very mixed responses to some of the departures.

Wrexham released their retained list recently and it included eight players set to be released, with Phil Parkinson wasting no time in trimming his squad before what promises to be a big summer transfer window.

The summer transfer window officially opens on June 1st and it’ll be another monumental window for the Dragons, who look set to spend big and likely break their transfer record several times.

Already, community director Humphrey Ker has given a hint towards Wrexham’s spending with the club unlikely to spend beyond their means: only what they make through sponsorships and such.

It’ll be an exciting time for those who arrive at the Racecourse this summer. And for those leaving, it might be a sad time, but it’s a chance to start somewhere new nonetheless.

Phil Parkinson discusses Jordan Davies’ Wrexham exit

Among the eight leaving Wrexham this summer is Jordan Davies. The Wrexham-born midfielder spent last season on loan at Grimsby Town where he featured 18 times in League Two, scoring four goals. But Davies suffered a season-ending injury in January and now he’s set to become a free agent.

Speaking to Leader Live, Parkinson admitted he felt sorry for the 26-year-old after how his last season panned out. The Wrexham boss said: “I feel for Jordan a little bit. I still think Jordan has got plenty to offer. He had a difficult season at Grimsby with his injuries but one thing you can’t take away from Jordan is he can be a match-winner.

“I sat down and had a really good chat with him last week, and just talked to him about what I felt he needed to do going forward because I want to see Jordan do well next year. He is someone who has certainly got the capabilities to do that.

“But he is at that point in his career where he knows he needs to have a good season next year.”

Jordan Davies’ message to Wrexham after summer exit confirmed

It’s certainly a difficult one for Parkinson, but it’s no doubt the right decision. Parkinson now needs Championship quality players in his ranks and Davies, though unfortunate on the injury front, just isn’t at that level yet.

Posting on social media after his exit was confirmed, Davies sent a message to Wrexham and to owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, thanking them for what they’ve done for the club and for Wrexham itself.

Davies wrote: “My time at my hometown club has come to end, safe to say we’ve been on a special journey not in my dreams when I joined back in Covid did I think I’d be leaving here 5 seasons later with it being a Championship club.

“With unbelievable achievements right along the way. I want to say thank you to all the players and staff that have helped me on the journey. It was a special group of lads to whole time.

“Special thank you Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney for changing the feel around the whole town, long may the Wrexham journey continue.”

If Davies can seal an EFL move this summer and stay injury-free next season, then he could enjoy a really strong campaign.
