Liverpool once paraded the sought-after Champions League trophy at the Racecourse Ground as they faced Wrexham in a seven-goal thriller.

Wrexham’s stature has increased significantly since the takeover of Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, with the Red Dragons skyrocketing through the divisions and now finding themselves in the Championship.

After many years of disappointment in North Wales, Wrexham have finally been treated to the good times, with Phil Parkinson managing a historic three successive promotions, all the way from the National League.

Before Reynolds and Mac’s takeover, there were difficult periods in the club’s history, with Wrexham fans having to fork out £100,000 to save their club in its darkest hour.

It has, however, also had its good times, including one friendly against recent Champions League winners Liverpool shortly after the miracle of Istanbul.

When Wrexham hosted Champions League winners Liverpool at the Racecourse Ground

In what was a historic moment for Liverpool, they brought back the Champions League trophy to UK soil to parade it in front of a sea of Reds fans. It had been decided, however, that this would take place in a pre-season friendly against Wrexham at the Racecourse Ground.

After Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher showed off the silverware to a packed Racecourse Ground, the two teams kicked off with a young Jonathan Walters giving the Red Dragons a surprise lead.

Liverpool then responded in Champions League-winning style with three goals courtesy of two braces from Fernando Morientes and Milan Baros.

Despite holding a comfortable 4-1 lead, Wrexham gave Liverpool a scare with Lee McEvilly and Rodney Jack netting for the home side to make it 4-3.

Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez deployed a full-strength side to face off against Wrexham, making a 4-3 defeat to the European champions a very respectable result for the Welsh outfit.

Wrexham’s record vs Liverpool

The Red Dragons have not faced off against Liverpool in a competitive fixture since 1978, making it an incredible spectacle to see the Reds play at the famous Racecourse Ground.

The League Cup clash in 1978 saw Liverpool run away with an away win, as they had done in the two previous meetings in 1970 and 1963, which both took place in the FA Cup.

Wrexham’s last win against Liverpool took place in the North Region War League. In fact, the year 1944 saw the Red Dragons notch three wins in a row against Liverpool.

Hopefully, with Wrexham’s rise to glory in recent years, there will be more games to come against the current champions of England.
