Bolton Wanderers reportedly make bid to sign exciting Wrexham transfer target

Wrexham are still chasing attacking additions this summer and could find themselves in a real League One transfer battle over one target.

Phil Parkinson’s men have been impressive in pre-season fixtures this summer.

Wrexham hammered non-league side Hanley Town before flying out to the United States for the ‘Wrex Coast Tour’.

Parkinson has seen his side draw with two Premier League clubs as both Bournemouth and Chelsea failed to beat Wrexham.

Yes, it’s only pre-season and we can’t take too much from the games, but Wrexham can be pleased with those displays against Premier League opposition.

Parkinson will be happy with how his new signings are settling in, but will still be keen to add further additions to his squad at the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham face John McAtee battle

Attacking additions may be the key for Wrexham in the coming weeks.

Goalscoring hero Paul Mullin is facing up to the prospect of missing the start of the season after undergoing surgery earlier in the summer.

Mullin would be a huge miss in attack and with Steven Fletcher potentially taking a lesser role as he approaches 38, Wrexham may need more options.

One name linked of late is Luton Town’s John McAtee, the brother of Manchester City talent James McAtee.

Luton ace McAtee is no stranger to Wrexham having dazzled with Grimsby Town against Wrexham back in 2022.

After impressing on loan at Barnsley last season, McAtee is now back with Luton but it’s unclear just what kind of role he will have after their relegation from the Premier League.

Wrexham are now interested in a raid for McAtee but will face major competition from one of Parkinson’s former clubs.

The Bolton News claim that Bolton Wanderers have submitted a bid to sign McAtee as the Trotters look to win the race.

Bolton missed out on promotion to the Championship in May, losing the League One playoff final to Oxford United.

Ian Evatt clearly wants to go one better this time and clearly believes that McAtee has the talent to help make that happen.

This would be a real coup for Wrexham anyway, but a move would feel even sweeter if it comes at Bolton’s expense – especially with the two sides meeting early in the season.

McAtee ideal for Wrexham squad

The 24-year-old is a superb talent either as a number 10 or as a striker, with his technical ability clear for all to see.

Wrexham fans will certainly recall a superb curling strike from McAtee two years ago, flying past the despairing dive of Christian Dibble.

Witnessing goals of that calibre from McAtee in a Wrexham shirt would be quite the sight and his profile makes sense for Parkinson’s squad.

Elliot Lee was superb last season but did look tired at times towards the end of the campaign.

Few players in the Wrexham squad offer the goal threat and attacking nous of Lee from an advanced midfield position and McAtee could offer competition in that role.

McAtee wouldn’t just be competition for Lee though, as his ability to play up top and drop in to spaces off the front line could be a fine complement to the likes of Mullin, Ollie Palmer and Jack Marriott.

McAtee won’t be cheap and won’t exactly be easy to sign with Bolton sniffing, but he is certainly a player worth chasing for Wrexham as the final month of the transfer window looms.
