Wrexham are keen to land a new striker this month but now face a major battle for one Premier League talent.

Tuesday appeared to have brought the transfer breakthrough Wrexham fans had been waiting for so patiently.

Reports suggested that Wrexham were close to signing Ryan Longman in a £500,000 move from Hull City.

The 24-year-old offers major versatility as a winger, wing back or even striker and could be major addition for Phil Parkinson.

That first signing may well be imminent but Oxford United have also been linked with Longman having played under boss Gary Rowett at Millwall.

Longman may have played as a forward before but he isn’t a natural striker – and Wrexham are still being linked with other forwards.

Wrexham face battle in Liverpool strike race

Reports earlier in January suggested that Wrexham were interested in Jayden Danns having seen the Liverpool youngster show huge potential.

Danns is only 19 but has already scored three times in seven first-team appearances for Liverpool.

The teenager has impressed in cup opportunities but suffered an injury in pre-season and didn’t return to full training until November.

Liverpool may now look to send Danns out on loan for first-team exposure and Wrexham may well be keen on taking him until the end of the season.

There is major competition for Danns though with The Athletic claiming that a number of Championship clubs are interested.

Blackburn Rovers, Preston North End and Stoke City are all thought to have shown an interest in taking Danns on loan.

Allowing Danns to test himself in the Championship may be viewed as more appealing for Liverpool over sending him to League One.

Blackburn have taken a number of players on loan from Liverpool in recent years, such as Tyler Morton, Leighton Clarkson and Harvey Elliott.

That connection could come into play but the key will be playing time with Danns keen to earn minutes away from Anfield.

This will now be a tough battle for Wrexham to win, but Parkinson may just have an ace up his sleeve.

Phil Parkinson has personal connection to Jayden Danns

Danns is the son of former Bolton Wanderers and Crystal Palace midfielder Neil Danns, who played in the Premier League for Birmingham City.

The former midfielder started out with Blackburn but actually made his name at Colchester United – playing under Parkinson.

Danns senior hit 28 goals in 87 games from midfiel under Parkinson, landing himself that move to Birmingham in 2006.

Speaking to the Daily Gazette in Essex, Danns admitted that he would is ‘forever grateful’ to Parkinson and all he did for him at Colchester.

Danns and Parkinson almost crossed paths again in 2016, but Danns was released by Bolton just a month before they appointed Parkinson as their manager.

Nearly 20 years since the pair went their separate ways, we now have a situation where Parkinson seemingly wants to sign Danns’ son in his pursuit of another promotion.

If Jayden asks his father for a word of advice, he may just have great things to say about Parkinson and a potential move to Wrexham.
