Championship striker left out of matchday squad amid claims Wrexham will make January move

Wrexham are in the market for a new striker in this January transfer window and Phil Parkinson may have one eye on Sheffield Wednesday.

Wrexham endured another frustrating away trip on Thursday night, suffering a 2-1 defeat at Shrewsbury Town.

Phil Parkinson’s side fell flat on derby day with a fairly toothless performance in Shropshire.

Steven Fletcher continued his fine recent form with another goal but that was about as good as it got.

Wrexham lacked guile and creativity in the final third and ending the game with four strikers on the pitch didn’t exactly help.

More creativity should be targeted in the transfer window but repots suggest that Wrexham are keen to land a proven Championship goalscorer.

Michael Smith out of Sheffield Wednesday squad

A host of names have been linked with Wrexham but the main name in the mix now appears to be Sheffield Wednesday’s Michael Smith.

Reports suggest that Wrexham are likely to move for Smith before the January window slams shut.

Wrexham held talks to sign Smith in the summer transfer window but no deal was done.

Now entering the final stages of his Wednesday contract, Smith may well be attracted by a move to the STōK Cae Ras.

Wrexham fans may have been interested to see how Smith fared as Wednesday travelled to take on Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

Confusion emerged though as Smith was nowhere to be seen when Wednesday’s team sheet was confirmed.

Smith wasn’t even named on the bench with the sticker’s omission setting tongues wagging.

Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has hardly quietened the rumours either with the Yorkshire Evening Post describing him as ‘tight-lipped’ when asked about Smith’s future.

Perhaps Smith was injured or ill, but his exclusion at Elland Road may leave some believing that a transfer is on the cards – and Wrexham could be at the front of the queue.

What would Michael Smith bring to Wrexham?

We would like to see more speed in the Wrexham attack but Smith certainly wouldn’t provide that kind of threat at this stage in his career.

Smith is now 33 and would be in a similar mould to Ollie Palmer in the Wrexham attack.

The Wallsend-born striker stands at 6ft 3in tall and offers a real aerial presence whilst linking up play as a target man.

Smith’s last League One campaign came in the 2022-23 season, racking up 17 goals in 39 appearances for Wednesday.

Parkinson seemingly believes that Smith’s presence and proven goalscoring record would give Wrexham another goalscoring threat, but his similarity to other forwards at Parkinson’s disposal may not excite many fans.
