Wrexham continue to be linked with potential midfield signings as Phil Parkinson weighs up additions to his engine room.

We are only just into June, but the Wrexham rumour mill is already in overdrive.

New names keep popping up every day and a number of the rumoured targets happen to be midfielders.

Tom Cairney is weighing up a move to Wrexham and Lewis O’Brien is on Phil Parkinson’s wish list.

Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Tommy Doyle has been linked with Wrexham in a potential £3million move.

Wrexham seem ready to spend on midfield additions, and one rumoured target has a real connection to the club.

Charlie Savage wants Championship move

The Mirror note that Wrexham are interested in signing Reading midfielder Charlie Savage.

It’s suggested that Birmingham City, Blackburn Rovers and Portsmouth are all interested in signing Savage this summer.

Crucially, the report claims Savage wants a move to the Championship this summer in order to boost his hopes of becoming a Welsh international regular.

That could play right into Wrexham’s hands, though a deal is expected to cost more than the £2million paid to sign Sam Smith from Reading in January.

Savage is the son of Wrexham-born Robbie Savage, and he admitted that his grandmother lives just a mile away from the STōK Cae Ras.

Savage made his Wales debut against Gibraltar at the STōK Cae Ras in October 2023, which was an emotional moment for his entire family.

“My nan’s coming, she lives about a mile away from the stadium, The Racecourse. To have all my family there from Wrexham, it will be an amazing night!” said Savage.

Fast forward, less than two years and Savage could find himself calling the STōK Cae Ras home if Wrexham pounce with a deal this summer.

Signing a left-footed midfielder could be Phil Parkinson’s focus

Savage would be a fascinating signing for Wrexham, as he hit five goals and nine assists in League One this past season.

The 22-year-old has potential for the future, but an interesting quirk here is that he is another left-footed midfielder.

The aforementioned Cairney and O’Brien are both left-footed, with Savage now the third left-footed midfielder to be a rumoured target.

That seems like much more than just a coincidence, with Parkinson potentially looking to add some balance to his midfield options.

George Dobson, Matty James, Ollie Rathbone and Elliot Lee are all right-footed and Parkinson may feel that Wrexham need a left-footer this summer.

Savage would certainly fit that bill, and the emotional pull of a move to Wrexham may leave the other interested clubs trailing behind.
